Book Arts Open Studio: Intermediate and Advanced

These sessions are for bookbinders who have take at least 2 bookbinding classes at CAW and can work independently, or who have permission of the department head. Fee includes use of materials. Participants may use materials and equipment that they already know how to use. There is no instruction. A monitor will be present at all sessions. Enrollment in this class includes one 3-hour monitored open bench session per week. This class will take place in a studio accessed by a flight of stairs. All Levels Metal Sculpture

Learn a variety of approaches to creating metal sculpture, including welding (oxyacetylene and MIG), brazing, cutting (torch and plasma cutter), hammering, and more. Ideal for intermediate and advanced students, this class supports the development of independent metal sculpture projects in a collaborative studio environment. Beginners are also welcome and will learn the fundamentals of shop safety, oxyacetylene and MIG welding, and how to use additional tools to finish and enhance their work. Students are encouraged to pursue self-directed projects while gaining inspiration from the techniques and ideas of fellow participants. Includes one 3-hour weekly practice session during monitored practice hours. Students should wear 100% cotton long sleeves, jeans or work pants, and closed-toe boots. Sewing Machine Basics: Build Skills & Confidence

Whether your sewing machine is brand new, has been sitting in a closet for years, or simply feels intimidating, this workshop will help you build the skills and confidence to start sewing. Students will learn how to thread and operate a home sewing machine, troubleshoot common problems, and practice essential techniques through guided sewing exercises. Topics include machine anatomy, threading the upper thread and bobbin, selecting needles and thread, adjusting basic settings, understanding stitch options and tension, and solving common issues such as skipped stitches, tangled thread, and broken needles. Students will also practice sewing straight lines, curves, corners, seam allowances, and backstitching while gaining the confidence to tackle future projects. The goal is not perfection. The goal is comfort, control, and confidence. This workshop is an excellent starting point for beginners and a helpful refresher for those who want to boost their confidence before joining another

Saturday Water-based Printmaking

Explore print processes using safe water-soluble inks and novel plate supports in an open forum approach where students work at their own pace and personal focus. Develop personal imagery utilizing woodcut, linocut, monotype, monoprint, collagraph, Chine-collé, drypoint, and multiple inking and printing techniques. Experiment with innovative plate supports, non-traditional inking procedures, and other approaches to image making. Suggested for intermediate to advanced independent printmakers.
