Learn to Knit

Roland Coffey

Learn to knit using circular needles. We will be covering fundamental skills including casting on stitches, knitting flat vs. knitting in the round, fixing mistakes like dropped stitches, casting off, and blocking your work. For those with knitting experience but looking to expand their skillset, we will also review advanced techniques, including color work, knitting cables, and seaming. Potential projects for beginners may include scarves and hats, while projects like socks and sweaters can be explored for knitters with more experience. This is the perfect class for beginners and those looking to refresh their knitting skills. All Levels Metal Sculpture

Learn the various approaches to creating metal sculptures, including welding (oxyacetylene and MIG), brazing, cutting (torch and plasma cutter), hammering, and more. Includes one 3-hour weekly practice session during monitored practice hours. Students should wear 100% cotton long sleeves, jeans or work pants, and closed-toe boots.  No synthetic mesh, plastic, or cloth. The tuition for this class includes a materials fee of $40. Making Functional Pots

If you are interested in making ceramic pieces for the home, this class is for you. Making functional pots is important to all levels of students, whether you throw pots on the wheel or prefer to build by hand. Students will learn ways to modify forms to create pieces uniquely their own. Classes will include various techniques for pot making as well as considerations pertaining to each form. Surface treatments including engobes, stains, and glazes will also be covered. Both teacher demonstrations and one-on-one student instruction will occur each week. Wear clothes that can get dirty. Pottery tool kits are available for sale in the studio for $27.  Cash or check only. Firing fees are $3/pound.  Cash or check only. Learn basic metalsmithing for making jewelry, developing new skills, or strengthen existing ones. Weekly demonstrations introduce tools and techniques required for working with nonferrous sheet metal and wire. Demonstrations may include sawing, filing, cold-connecting, soldering, surface embellishment, forging, shaping, fold forming, finishing, and patina coloring. Can I Eat That?

Explore the delicious intersection of food and art. Students will delve into the works of artists like Peter Anton, Claes Oldenburg, and Wayne Thiebaud, who transform culinary themes into captivating masterpieces. We’ll use their artwork for inspiration to make two and three dimensional artwork with a variety of materials including clay, cardboard, papier-mâché, fabric, paint, and paper. Weather permitting, there will be a one-day field trip to the Yale University Art Gallery to view examples of food in art. Join us for a feast of creativity and imagination! Fun with Metal

Hammer, saw, fold, stamp, twist, shape, and heat metal to make sculpture and jewelry. Students will learn techniques using copper and brass sheet metal along with wire to create 2-D and 3-D objects and forms. Have fun exploring basic hand tools such as mallets, cutters, files, pliers, and torches (one-on-one with instructor). Digital Photography Introduction

Interested in capturing great images but not sure how to get started? By covering a few basic concepts, you will see your images improve and your confidence grow. We cover basic camera settings and provide tips to make the process easier. Both beginners and intermediate skill photographers will benefit from this course. Bring a digital camera to class with your lenses. Be sure to bring a charged battery and memory card installed. Image Transfer with Analog and Digital Processes

Explore the expressive potential of image transfer through a dynamic blend of analog and digital methods. Students will generate original visuals—by hand, digitally (including iPad-based work), or from found materials—and learn how to apply these images to paper or fabric surfaces. Working with toner photocopies, color laser prints, acrylic mediums, and various printed sources, you'll dive into a range of transfer techniques. Experimentation with grayscale, full color, and acrylic inks will support the creation of richly layered, visually compelling pieces. Bring your favorite drawing tools and any imagery you'd like to work with—magazines, photocopies, newspapers, photographs, or other visual ephemera.
