Exploring Linoleum Block Printmaking

Explore the art of block printing with linoleum. The instructor will demonstrate the process for carving and printing a 4” x 6” linoleum block, as well as a variety of inking and printing processes. Students will focus on developing original designs and concepts to prepare a linoleum block to ink, create a series, and print the results.  All printing will be done with water-soluble inks.  Includes one 3-hour weekly practice session during monitored practice hours. Tuition for this class includes a fee of $20 for basic materials provided by CAW including Linoleum blocks and water-based inks. Art Playground

This isn’t your typical playground—get ready for a world of creativity! At CAW's playground, students will have access to a rainbow of materials: colored sand, wood, clay, tempera and watercolor paints, markers, tissue paper, and so much more! Using all these supplies, they’ll create amazing projects like masks, paper dolls, animals, birds, insects, portraits, and even imaginary creatures. How will they bring their ideas to life? By cutting, folding, stomping, splashing, blending, texturing, painting, and coloring—all while mixing their own one-of-a-kind colors. We bet you'll wish you could join in the fun too! What turns a simple drawing of a chair or a tree into a true work of art? It’s the artist’s imagination, emotions, and creativity. Embark on a journey of transformation, reimagining everything around us—trees, flowers, birds, animals, everyday objects, and more—as unique artworks. Students will refine their skills in realistic sketching, while also exploring innovative ways, like altering size, context, or perspective, to infuse imagination into their drawings. Join us on an exciting and creative journey across the African savannah, where students will sketch, detail, and animate favorite animals in their natural habitats. Continuing Painting

For aspiring oil or acrylic painters with some fundamental painting skills, this 7-week course will cover the basics of rendering the head and portrait, landscape painting, and spatial deconstruction (Cubism). Emphasis will be placed on paint handling techniques and the application of color to describe forms and space vividly. Students will learn to identify some of the creative processes involved with perception and visual interpretation. Come to the first meeting with basic painting supplies, a pencil, and a small mirror or self-portrait photos. Students who have had instruction in the described practices, and would like to continue at a more advanced level, are also welcome. Everyone has seen journals like this with the decorative sewing on the spine and a wrap around cover. Learn to make one yourself! Using sturdy card stock with a reinforced spine, students will learn to personalize their books with button closures, decorative papers, and interior pockets—perfect for collecting loose items. This structure opens flat, making it ideal for use as a sketchbook or journal. No specialized equipment is needed, so you'll be able to continue making these books at home. Instruction will cover foundational bookbinding techniques including measuring, cutting, gluing, and sewing. Intermediate students are welcome to pursue independent projects. No experience necessary. Enrollment in this class includes one 3 hour monitored open bench session a week. This class will take place in a studio accessed by a flight of stairs. Although the primary focus is on wheel throwing, we will also explore hand-building and ways to combine the two disciplines. Time will additionally be spent on the importance of trimming and glazing. Techniques for Wheel Throwing

Paper Folding: An Introduction

Explore the incredible potential of this most mundane of materials. Beginning with very simple ideas and techniques, students will gain skill and move towards some of the folding patterns from Horstman's own art practice, as well as ideas developed by Josef Albers when he was teaching at the Bauhaus. (Horstman is also Education Director at the Albers Foundation.) Participants will be given (achievable) challenges as well as time to experiment with new skills and material. No prior experience is required. Note that though some of the skills and materials are similar, this is not an origami workshop.
