Paper Folding: An Introduction

Explore the incredible potential of this most mundane of materials. Beginning with very simple ideas and techniques, students will gain skill and move towards some of the folding patterns from Horstman's own art practice, as well as ideas developed by Josef Albers when he was teaching at the Bauhaus. (Horstman is also Education Director at the Albers Foundation.) Participants will be given (achievable) challenges as well as time to experiment with new skills and material. No prior experience is required. Note that though some of the skills and materials are similar, this is not an origami workshop. Tuition for this class includes a fee of $10 for basic materials provided by CAW. Art Playground

No typical sand or slides at this playground! CAW's playground has colored sand, wood, clay, tempera and watercolor paints, markers, tissue paper and more items than we have space to list here. Students will use all these supplies to create projects including masks, paper dolls, animals, birds, insects, portraits, and imaginary creatures. How will they do all this? By cutting, folding, stomping, splashing, blending, texturing, painting, and coloring (after they mix their own unique colors). Bet you wish you could stay too! Zhen Xian Bao: Chinese Thread Book Twisted Variations

Discover the interactive folded-box layers of the Zhen Xian Bao (Chinese thread book or thread pocket) focusing on its twist-box variations. The TWIST box is one of the mysterious layers of the Zhen Xian Bao, a utilitarian folk art from central China used to store mending or haberdashery supplies.  The traditional boxes are decorated with colorful designs - your twist boxes can be embellished, scaled into multiple sizes, or layered onto other box structures. Learn at least four folded twist box possibilities with time to try out designing your own variations.  Build on your current skills or add new techniques to your creative paper-folding practice. Experimental Printmaking for Teens introduces students to a variety of techniques—including relief printing (aka stamping) and screen printing—while encouraging creative, outside-the-box thinking. From Still Life to Abstraction

Painting for all! This class covers foundational painting skills through a progression from observational still life to increasingly abstract approaches. Students explore value, color, composition, and gesture through hands-on studio exercises that emphasize seeing, perception, and material experimentation. Working from direct observation and lived experience, students learn to simplify, translate, and transform visual information into expressive painted forms.  Students may work in acrylic or oil paint. Most demonstrations will be using oil paint. Tuition for this class includes a fee of $10 for basic materials (such as newsprint and/or charcoal) provided by CAW. Metalsmithing/Jewelry

Learn basic metalsmithing for making jewelry, developing new skills, or strengthen existing ones. Weekly demonstrations introduce tools and techniques required for working with nonferrous sheet metal and wire. Demonstrations may include sawing, filing, cold-connecting, soldering, surface embellishment, forging, shaping, fold forming, finishing, and patina coloring. Experimental Printmaking

Explore and develop designs intaglio and monotype printmaking in this hands-on course. Class time will focus on creating original designs and concepts as students experiment with print plate substrates, including Corian®, Tetra-Pak®, vinyl records, and various recycled and found materials. Examples of different print styles will be shared to illustrate these techniques. This course is suitable for beginners and advanced students alike. Print Day in May 2026

Print Day in May is an annual international celebration of printmaking taking place on the first Saturday in May. Join us in the print studio at Creative Arts Workshop as we gather with thousands of participants around the globe to recognize this special art community. Enter to win a free printmaking class or workshop at CAW! (Details to follow) Printmakers: CAW's studio is equipped for relief, intaglio, screen print, and monotype processes, and offers four printmaking presses: a 25” x 48” Takach, a 42" x 26" Takach, a 30” x 48” Charles Brand etching press, a 36” x 60” Charles Brand etching press, and a 28” x 50” motorized Charles Brand press. Participants must have printmaking experience, be familiar with working in a community studio, and may spend the time on independent projects. There is no instruction. CAW will provide a limited assortment of oil based etching inks and Akua soy-based inks, as well as acids, tools, and clean-up supplies. Attendees should provide their own
