Wearable Art: From Concept to Creation

Tea Montgomery

Fiber Arts Class: All Levels

Clothing can be more than something we wear—it can tell a story, express an idea or one’s personal mythology, or become a work of art.

Moving beyond traditional fashion design, students will treat the body as a canvas and clothing as a form of communication. Whether inspired by fashion, costume, fiber arts, sustainable design, or storytelling, students will complete an original wearable art piece—or a small capsule look—that reflects their unique artistic vision.

Practical skills such as measuring, cutting, draping, sewing, problem-solving, and finishing will be taught, while also exploring how garments can express memory, emotion, movement, protection, culture, and transformation.

Through weekly meetings, students will be exposed to:

  • How to develop a concept for a wearable piece
  • How to gather visual and material inspiration
  • Basic measuring and fitting awareness
  • Fabric manipulation and surface design
  • Simple garment construction or garment transformation
  • Upcycling and reconstruction methods
  • How to make design decisions based on story, movement, and body
  • How to present and speak about finished work

This class is ideal for students interested in fashion, costume, sculpture, performance, fiber arts, personal storytelling, or sustainable design.

Please see information below regarding materials students should bring to class.
