Book Arts

The Accordion Book as a Removable Feast

Come learn an exciting variation on the accordion book that has pages that are frames attached to an accordion fold. The pages can be attached to a wide range of accordion structures or even sewn into a codex structure. These page frames can be filled with varied content which can easily be removed: photos, postcards, text,  collage, paper cut outs, layered translucent papers. It can even be fashioned as a paper quilt! Students will add hard covers to make it a sturdy book  Let’s see what other creative uses we can come up with! Folded Maps in a Mini Atlas

Introduction to Painting

Don’t be intimidated any longer—come learn to paint. This class will unfold the mysteries of painting by introducing students to the basics of acrylic and/or oil paint: selecting materials, setting up a palette, handling paint, and composing a picture. The class will emphasize learning to see what you wish to paint with the goal of rendering form clearly in terms of color and design. Come to the first class ready to paint. Students are free to choose between oil and acrylic media. Oil paint is the more traditional medium. It is bound with linseed, or similar oils, and thinned with turpentine and/or mineral spirits. It retains the brush mark, is very flexible, easy to blend and dries relatively slowly: 24 hours to several days for some colors. Introduction to Watercolor

Try your hand at this beautiful art form as we work week-by-week on achieving the ethereal qualities of watercolor painting. Start with the basics including color mixing, paint and brush techniques, composition, followed by discussions of special techniques which highlight the qualities unique to this medium. We will learn about correct applications and the uniqueness  to watercolor painting.  Students will work from close observation of still life displays or photos.  There will be teacher demonstrations at each class. Everyone is encouraged to develop their own artistic style while getting accustomed to the techniques of the medium. Making functional pots is important to all levels of students, whether you throw pots on the wheel or prefer to build by hand. Welcome to the wide world of printmaking! Students will create their own original fine art prints as they explore and gain experience with a range of printmaking techniques including: Linocut relief, in which a block of linoleum is carved into and areas of the surface are cut away to create an image that is then inked and printed onto paper (this was a favorite printmaking method of Picasso) Monotype techniques that result in a one-of-a-kind unique print, made by drawing and painting printmaking inks onto a surface and manipulating them to create an image to be printed (considered the most ‘painterly’ type of printmaking, used by artists such as Chagall and Matisse) Drypoint intaglio processes that involve altering the physical surface of a plate (by hand engraving, sanding, and other means) to create line and texture (famous artists who used drypoint include Rembrandt, Milton Avery, and Mary Cassatt). Introduction to Drawing and Painting with Castles and Charades

Experiment, create, and have fun! This course introduces students to the basics of drawing and painting. The first two classes will be dedicated to drawing with a project called "Still Life Imagination Castles. "Students will build block structures to inspire their creative drawing of an imaginary castle. The second two classes will be dedicated to painting with a project called "Hold it Up," a Keith Haring inspired artworks where figures hold up a symbol that represents one of their favorite things. They will use each other as examples in a charade activity where they take turns holding their bodies in different positions while actually holding, or pretending to hold, an object in the air. Build a House, Create a Neighborhood

Create a house out of cardboard, repurposed fabric, wood, tile, and recycled plastic objects. Decorate it, furnish it, and put a mini-version of yourself in it. Then get together with your new friends, put all your houses together and build a neighborhood.  What happens next in the neighborhood is up to you—a block party, a ball game, hopscotch, bike riding, you name it!  Then with collaborative story-telling, students will talk about those adventures taking place in this newly-created setting. To remember what happened here, students will write and illustrate mini-books about some aspect of their shared story. It takes a village to raise a child -CAW is honored to be part of your village. PROCESS: Experiment with clay and observe the results of wetting and drying the clay, painting with liquid clay, adding and subtracting amounts of clay, as well as other methods the children discover both individually and collaboratively. Animal Inspirations

This program is for the young artist who enjoys making art about animals. Students will create a range of artwork including paintings of animal portraits, collages of pond life, clay bugs and creatures, and safari animals made out of felt material. Incorporation of colors, textures, and shapes will be used to discover differences about animals. Their habitats and what makes them unique will be explored using supplemental materials, books, and photos. Grandparents and Children Creating Together

Make memories with your grandchild. This class offers a beautiful opportunity for elders and their grandchildren to get to know each other better while working across the spectrum of art materials. Each day children will explore materials in the studio, while their respective grandparents observe, encourage and collaborate. They can use different types of materials in one project, or concentrate on gaining a deeper understanding of just one or two materials.  The decision is all theirs. We know the children will end up with paint, glue, glitter and other items on their clothes by the end of each session.  Grandparents, be prepared to look just like your grandchild -get ready to get messy. Teen Metal

Learn basic metalworking techniques to create mini sculptures and jewelry. Saw, hammer, forge, stamp, fold, rivet, and solder copper sheet and wire. Students will use hand tools and a gas torch (one-on-one with instructor) to make metal malleable and solder pieces together. 2-D and 3-D forms will be created, including organic shapes, vessels, spheres, and boxes. Tuition for this class includes a fee of $20 for basic materials provided by CAW. Recycled Creations

Let’s get ready to reuse, repurpose and recreate! Using everyday objects (and some traditional art materials), students will transform throw away/discarded items into works of art including sculptures, collages, and paintings. Projects may include building a city, newspaper portraits, juice bottle creature banks, puzzle piece bugs, and egg carton faces.  Students will be introduced to the basics of recycling and its beneficial purposes.
