Edited by Sara Jane Boyers, the picture book Life Doesn’t Frighten Me features the work of two legendary artists—poet Maya Angelou and artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.
The poem and paintings were not specifically created for children, but when combined, they create a brave, defiant tale that celebrates the courage within each of us, young and old.
Students will listen to a reading of the poem and be asked to write down words that stick out to them. Once they have compiled their list, they will create a piece of artwork that represents these words, experimenting with Basquiat’s child-like, playful style.
Using different materials, they will play with painting and drawing techniques they would not normally use, all while listening to jazz musicians that also inspired the work of Basquiat.
Tuition for this class includes a fee of $20 for basic materials provided by CAW.
