Experiment with color and pattern by creating a unique set of puzzle pieces and stencils to produce a series of prints using a variety of printmaking mediums.
Students will learn painterly printmaking techniques to create background designs on a sheet of acrylic and then transfer the designs onto heavy paper using an intaglio printing press. Next, they will cut paper stencil shapes to add color and interest to their background designs.
The puzzle pieces are inked and printed by hand over stenciled colors to add pattern. The magic happens when layered colors combine to create vibrant, new colors.
Colorful, heavily textured Asian papers can be collaged onto the print for added interest.
Students will be able to complete several prints that might be very different from each other or include some of the same visual elements. The possibilities for color and composition are endless.
Once students have experimented individually, they will work together to share their puzzle pieces and stencils to create a large group print.
