Advanced Memoir Writing: Pulling It All Together

If you enjoy memoir writing and have a collection of your stories, this is a chance to pull your work into a cohesive narrative. Through instructor feedback and class workshop exercises, you will select, edit, and supplement your writing, creating a longer body of work. Self-publishing will be discussed. Note: demonstrated previous memoir writing experience is required or attendance in a previous CAW memoir writing class. Tuition for this class includes a fee of $10 for photocopying memoirs. Ever wanted to make something fun but needed the supplies, a place to get messy, or a little inspiration? We have it all! Come relax and get creative in our studio using a wonderful collection of recycled materials. Give new life to decorative papers, fabrics, twigs, yarn, and more as you create greeting cards, bookmarks, wall hangings, collages, handmade books, pillowcases, placemats, or anything else you can imagine—the sky's the limit! The instructor will be there to offer guidance and encouragement as you create. All ages are welcome! Drop off your young artist, or stay and create together. Cost is $50 per person. Exploring Linoleum Block Printing

Explore the art of block printing with linoleum. The instructor will demonstrate the process for carving and printing a 4” x 6” linoleum block, as well as a variety of inking and printing processes. Students will focus on developing original designs and concepts to prepare a linoleum block to ink, create a series, and print the results. All printing will be done with water-soluble inks. Includes one 3-hour weekly practice session during monitored practice hours. Tuition for this class includes a fee of $20 for basic materials provided by CAW. Japanese Woodblock (Mokuhanga) – Beginner and Intermediate

Rooted in centuries of tradition, this hands-on, non-toxic process uses natural materials to produce innovative and beautiful contemporary woodblock prints. Beginners will learn to design, carve, and print a small edition using hand-applied pigments, rice paste, and kento registration to achieve rich color and subtle tonal blends. Intermediate students will expand their practice by combining mokuhanga with intaglio line work and embossing, printing expressive, dimensional images using both hand printing and an intaglio press. Includes one 3-hour practice session per week during monitored practice hours. Tuition for this class includes a fee of $35 for materials provided by CAW including paper, Shina wood blocks, nori paste, and ink. Power of Value: Monochromatic Abstraction

Explore one of the most essential and often overlooked foundations of painting: value. Focusing exclusively on black, white, and gray, students will create an abstract painting while exploring the powerful role value plays in composition, movement, depth, atmosphere, and emotion. By setting color aside, students will develop a more sensitive eye for light, shadow, and tonal relationships while strengthening their understanding of composition and visual structure. Along the way, explore expressive brushwork, mark-making, layering techniques, paint consistency, and the use of mediums such as gloss glazing and airbrush medium to create rich, dynamic surfaces. Exercises throughout the day build toward one finished abstract painting. Ideal for painters interested in abstraction, strengthening their foundations, or gaining a deeper appreciation for the expressive power of value.
