Visual Storytelling: Photography with Meaning

In person

Denton Hoyer

Great photographs do more than capture a moment—they communicate an idea, evoke emotion, and tell a compelling story. Learn how to use composition, light, timing, and perspective to create images that convey narrative and meaning. Whether your subject is a person, a place, an event, or an abstract concept, you’ll explore techniques for building photographs that engage viewers and express your unique point of view. This workshop is designed for photographers who are already comfortable with the basic functions and settings of their camera. Rather than focusing on how to operate your equipment, we will concentrate on creative strategies for making images with greater depth, intention, and impact. School Policies Students who withdraw 48 hours prior to the first class are eligible for a refund or credit toward another class, less a $25 registration fee. Please click here for more details.

The Art of Now: A Yoga and Poetry Sensory Workshop

Ash Baker

Creative writing, like a dedicated yoga practice, draws from the full range of ways we perceive the world. Yogic philosophy outlines five “koshas,” or layers of awareness, from the body and physical environment to connection to bliss and the divine. This holistic practice develops our ability to witness our experiences and sensations so we can find beauty and inspiration from what, without the practice, can seem mundane. By offering tools that feel simple, accessible, and sustainable, this 2-hour poetry workshop will help students create space for artistic expression by drawing on mindfulness practices and yoga postures that open channels for creative energy. Beginning with a short meditation and gentle movement to support participants in arriving in the present moment, the group will then be invited to respond to one of several writing prompts. Please bring a notebook for writing, pen or pencil, yoga mat, and water bottle. School Policies Students who withdraw 48 hours prior to

The Very Basics of Etching

In person

Maura Galante

Discover the magic of etching, a printmaking process in which lines are incised into a metal plate to create an image. Ink is worked into the grooves, the surface of the plate is carefully wiped clean, and damp paper is placed over the plate and run through a printmaking press to transfer the image onto the paper. Because the design on the plate is permanent, multiple impressions can be printed. Participants will explore both traditional etching, which uses acid, and drypoint, an acid-free intaglio technique. Please bring paper towels and an apron to class. All other materials provided. The tuition for this class includes a materials fee of $12 for basic materials provided by CAW. School Policies Students who withdraw 48 hours prior to the first class are eligible for a refund or credit toward another class, less a $25 registration fee. Please click here for more details.

The Very Basics of Relief Printmaking

In person

Maura Galante

Relief printmaking is a technique that involves carving or cutting away parts of a block or other material, leaving the raised areas to receive ink. Paper is placed over the inked surface, and the image is transferred either by hand or with a printmaking press. Since the image on the block or plate is permanent, multiple impressions can be made. We will work primarily with linoleum blocks, and other surfaces such as wood and cardboard will be discussed. The tuition for this class includes a materials fee of $12 for basic materials provided by CAW. School Policies Students who withdraw 48 hours prior to the first class are eligible for a refund or credit toward another class, less a $25 registration fee. Please click here for more details.

Japanese Woodblock (Mokuhanga) Simplified

Margot Rocklen

Learn basic Japanese woodblock skills in 3 sessions. You will plan a simple color drawing for your print, then transfer the different colors of the design to soft, easily-cut blocks. Using linoleum-cutting tools you will carve the designs into the blocks, adding traditional kento registration guides on each block, insuring that your printing paper will always align correctly. Lastly, you will have time to print your blocks using the centuries-old technique of brushing rice paste and liquid pigments directly onto the blocks. You will print the blocks consecutively by hand on an assortment of colored and textured Asian papers. If you enjoy the technique and want to learn a more complex version, you can register for an intermediate mokuhanga class where we use shina plywood blocks and cutting tools specifically designed for this method of printmaking. Includes 3-hour practice session per week during monitored practice hours. Tuition for this class includes a fee of $20 for materials
