Beginning/Intermediate Pottery

This class is for beginners eager to learn all aspects of pottery, as well as returnees who wish to hone their skills. Although the primary focus is on wheel throwing, we will also explore hand-building and ways to combine the two disciplines. Time will additionally be spent on the importance of trimming and glazing. Wear clothes that can get dirty. Pottery tool kits are available for sale in the studio for $27 and firing fees are $3/pound.  Cash or check only. Includes one 3-hour weekly practice session during monitored practice hours on a first-come, first-served basis and you are encouraged to take advantage of this. Continuing Painting

For aspiring oil or acrylic painters with some fundamental painting skills, this 7-week course will cover the basics of rendering the head and portrait, landscape painting, and spatial deconstruction (Cubism). Emphasis will be placed on paint handling techniques and the application of color to describe forms and space vividly. Students will learn to identify some of the creative processes involved with perception and visual interpretation. Come to the first meeting with basic painting supplies, a pencil, and a small mirror or self-portrait photos. Students who have had instruction in the described practices, and would like to continue at a more advanced level, are also welcome. Paper Folding: An Introduction

Explore the incredible potential of this most mundane of materials. Beginning with very simple ideas and techniques, students will gain skill and move towards some of the folding patterns from Horstman's own art practice, as well as ideas developed by Josef Albers when he was teaching at the Bauhaus. (Horstman is also Education Director at the Albers Foundation.) Participants will be given (achievable) challenges as well as time to experiment with new skills and material. No prior experience is required. Note that though some of the skills and materials are similar, this is not an origami workshop. The Longstitch and Variations

Everyone has seen journals like this with the decorative sewing on the spine and a wrap around cover. Learn to make one yourself! Using sturdy card stock with a reinforced spine, students will learn to personalize their books with button closures, decorative papers, and interior pockets—perfect for collecting loose items. This structure opens flat, making it ideal for use as a sketchbook or journal. No specialized equipment is needed, so you'll be able to continue making these books at home. Instruction will cover foundational bookbinding techniques including measuring, cutting, gluing, and sewing. Intermediate students are welcome to pursue independent projects. No experience necessary. Enrollment in this class includes one 3 hour monitored open bench session a week. This class will take place in a studio accessed by a flight of stairs. Techniques for Wheel Throwing

New and experienced students will focus on making pottery on the wheel. Start by using methods of wedging, centering, hand and finger positioning for raising a vessel, and positioning one's body for dealing with a mass of clay on the wheel. Demonstrations will cover the importance of trimming techniques and various forming processes. Wear clothes that can get dirty. Develop your pottery skills as you focus on wheel-throwing techniques in stoneware and porcelain. Lessons will cover both functional and decorative pottery with emphasis on classical forms as we know them. Students will be shown how to apply glazes and/or oxide washes to achieve desired results, such as combining glaze colors and the application of wood ash to create unexpected effects on their work. Intermediate Black and White Analog Film Photography

Deepen your understanding of traditional photographic processes while refining darkroom techniques. Explore toning, medium and large format photography, and alternative processes such as cyanotype and palladium printing. Emphasis is placed on developing a cohesive body of work through regular critiques and group discussions, fostering both technical growth and conceptual clarity. Designed for those with prior experience in black-and-white film development and printing. Tuition includes optional open lab time on Fridays from 6-9 PM, where students can practice and refine the techniques covered in class. Students with limited experience in film photography are welcome to enroll and can catch up through the weekly practice lab sessions. A $20 materials fee for basic supplies provided by CAW is included in the tuition.
