Learn basic Japanese woodblock skills in 3 sessions. You will plan a simple color drawing for your print, then transfer the different colors of the design to soft, easily-cut blocks. Using linoleum-cutting tools you will carve the designs into the blocks, adding traditional kento registration guides on each block, insuring that your printing paper will always align correctly. Lastly, you will have time to print your blocks using the centuries-old technique of brushing rice paste and liquid pigments directly onto the blocks. You will print the blocks consecutively by hand on an assortment of colored and textured Asian papers.
If you enjoy the technique and want to learn a more complex version, you can register for an intermediate mokuhanga class where we use shina plywood blocks and cutting tools specifically designed for this method of printmaking.
Includes 3-hour practice session per week during monitored practice hours.
Tuition for this class includes a fee of $20 for materials provided by CAW including paper, Shina wood blocks, nori paste, and ink.

Students who withdraw 48 hours prior to the first class are eligible for a refund or credit toward another class, less a $25 registration fee.
