Creative Writing

The Art of Now: A Yoga and Poetry Sensory Workshop

Ash Baker

All Levels

Creative writing, like a dedicated yoga practice, draws from the full range of ways we perceive the world. Yogic philosophy outlines five “koshas,” or layers of awareness, from the body and physical environment to connection to bliss and the divine. This holistic practice develops our ability to witness our experiences and sensations so we can find beauty and inspiration from what, without the practice, can seem mundane. By offering tools that feel simple, accessible, and sustainable, this 2-hour poetry workshop will help students create space for artistic expression by drawing on mindfulness practices and yoga postures that open channels for creative energy. Beginning with a short meditation and gentle movement to support participants in arriving in the present moment, the group will then be invited to respond to one of several writing prompts. Please bring a notebook for writing, pen or pencil, yoga mat, and water bottle. School Policies Students who withdraw 48 hours prior to

Flash Auto Fiction: The True Lie

In person

Zay Amsbury

All Levels

Every life contains more material than any writer can use. The challenge isn't finding the story. It's knowing which ten seconds of it to keep. Flash autofiction is a form of very short fiction drawn directly from the writer's own life. The pieces are short enough to hold in one breath but dense enough to leave a mark. We will work the way serious writers work: with urgency, specificity, and no alibis. Session one is about generation. Excavate personal material using exercises that move fast and trust the body's memory over the mind's. We're not looking for the tidy story. We're looking for the true one, even when and especially when it resists. Session two is revision. Apply structured techniques to determine what the piece actually is, strip away what it isn't, and push the language until every word is earning its place. You don't need experience in autofiction. You just need to be willing to look honestly at your own experience and do the work of transforming it into

The Very Basics of Etching

In person

Maura Galante

All Levels, Beginner

Discover the magic of etching, a printmaking process in which lines are incised into a metal plate to create an image. Ink is worked into the grooves, the surface of the plate is carefully wiped clean, and damp paper is placed over the plate and run through a printmaking press to transfer the image onto the paper. Because the design on the plate is permanent, multiple impressions can be printed. Participants will explore both traditional etching, which uses acid, and drypoint, an acid-free intaglio technique. The Very Basics of Relief Printmaking

In person

Maura Galante

All Levels, Beginner

Relief printmaking is a technique that involves carving or cutting away parts of a block or other material, leaving the raised areas to receive ink. Paper is placed over the inked surface, and the image is transferred either by hand or with a printmaking press. Since the image on the block or plate is permanent, multiple impressions can be made. We will work primarily with linoleum blocks, and other surfaces such as wood and cardboard will be discussed.
