Beginning and Intermediate Box Making

In person

Paulette Rosen

Book Arts Class: Beginner + Intermediate

Boxes have long been used by bookbinders to protect valuable books from dust and light—but they can also be objects of beauty in their own right. In this hands-on workshop, students will learn how to design and construct elegant and functional boxes—perfect for storing cherished keepsakes, personal treasures, or artist tools.

Working with binders’ board, fabric, and decorative papers, explore the fundamentals of box construction while creating pieces that are both practical and visually striking. The first box will be a simple open-top box and students will gradually build skills to create boxes of varying sizes, incorporating lids, trays, drawers, and flaps. Along the way, learn essential book and box-making techniques, including accurate measuring, cutting, and gluing.

No prior experience is required—this workshop is ideal for both artists and non-artists who enjoy working with their hands and learning a timeless craft. Students with previous box-making experience are welcome to design and construct more complex projects with guided support.

Tuition for this class includes a fee of $34 for basic materials provided by CAW.
