Getting to Know Your Camera: A FREE Digital Photography Workshop

Curious about digital photography?  Modern digital cameras can vastly outperform your cell phone camera, but can often be confusing and complicated to use. In this free workshop, we teach a simple but powerful approach to camera set up and handling that will get you shooting great photos right away. Explore, learn, and practice drawing exercises and techniques in a supportive environment. Increase visual perception, skills and confidence, and develop your unique style. Work with drawing pencils, charcoal, pastels, watercolor and ink/pens. Weekly demos and exercises include mark-making, line, value, form, texture and shading. Subjects include animals, everyday objects, portraits, nature, as well as students’ interests. We draw from observation, references and imagination. All materials provided. Join us! Drawing Light and Dark

See light and dark in a new way. Learn about shading, contrast, line-work, and composition in this traditional drawing course focusing on creating artwork in monochrome fashion. Students will practice techniques to create bold and expressive works of art using pencils, charcoal and colored pencils. This course provides an important foundation for any young artist. Techniques for Wheel Throwing

New and experienced students will focus on making pottery on the wheel. Start by using methods of wedging, centering, hand and finger positioning for raising a vessel, and positioning one's body for dealing with a mass of clay on the wheel. Demonstrations will cover the importance of trimming techniques and various forming processes. Wear clothes that can get dirty. Pottery tool kits are available for sale in the studio for $27. Payable by credit card, cash, or check. Firing fees are $3.50/pound.  Cash or check only. Includes one 3-hour weekly practice session during monitored practice hours on a first-come, first-served basis. From Still Life to Abstraction

Painting for all! This class covers foundational painting skills through a progression from observational still life to increasingly abstract approaches. Students explore value, color, composition, and gesture through hands-on studio exercises that emphasize seeing, perception, and material experimentation. Working from direct observation and lived experience, students learn to simplify, translate, and transform visual information into expressive painted forms.  Students may work in acrylic or oil paint. Most demonstrations will be using oil paint. Tuition for this class includes a fee of $10 for basic materials (such as newsprint and/or charcoal) provided by CAW. Tetra-Pak® Printmaking

Explore innovative approaches to printmaking using recycled Tetra-Pak® packaging as an alternative plate material. This hands-on experience introduces both intaglio and monotype techniques, with an emphasis on on imagery design, mark making, tool use, plate inking, ink removal and treatment techniques to provide a variety of print outcomes.  Process demonstrations and examples of Tetra-Pak® prints will support exploration and experimentation. All inks are water-washable for easy cleanup.  Includes one 3-hour weekly practice session during monitored practice hours. Boxes have long been used by bookbinders to protect valuable books from dust and light—but they can also be objects of beauty in their own right. In this hands-on workshop, students will learn how to design and construct elegant and functional boxes—perfect for storing cherished keepsakes, personal treasures, or artist tools. Working with binders’ board, fabric, and decorative papers, explore the fundamentals of box construction while creating pieces that are both practical and visually striking. The first box will be a simple open-top box and students will gradually build skills to create boxes of varying sizes, incorporating lids, trays, drawers, and flaps. Along the way, learn essential book and box-making techniques, including accurate measuring, cutting, and gluing. Overcome the mysteries of the sewing machine and discover how fun and easy it can be! Learn the basics of machine sewing including threading, operating, and troubleshooting. Practice using the machine and then move on to simple projects for yourself or for gift-giving. Choice of projects will include a 4-patch pin cushion, Boho bags, zippered pouch, and items for the home such as pillow covers. Tips for altering clothes can also be covered.
