The world is made of shapes: cones, prisms, cylinders, tetrahedrons, cuboids, and more. Discover how to spot geometrical elements in nature and how it was used in decorative and fine arts through the history of different cultures. Exploring visual geometry develops a deeper understanding of spatial relations, scale, symmetry, and 3D construction.
Students will explore spatial relations, scale, symmetry, and 3D construction through projects with both 2D and 3D approaches:
- Fold shapes out of paper to use as columns, blocks, arches and roofs
- Explore mathematical concepts such as golden ratio, symmetry, patterns, proportion, and fractals by finding them in famous artwork of Kandinsky, Pollack, Mondrian, Escher and other artists
- Create castles and cities and then learn how to draw them in perspective
- Discover the power of three essential tools: the ruler, the triangle, and the compassand use them to create unique patterns, optical illusions and abstract compositions
