I am a local photographer, and I primarily make portraits (of both people and animals). In this ongoing series I am photographing horses in their stalls in a barn in Bethany, experimenting specifically with the use of low light to emphasize shape and form. Humans feel connected to horses, perhaps because of our shared history and dependence. Everything from start to finish is done by me: the initial photographing, the editing, and the printing, which will be for this series on cotton matte archival paper. Photographs will be approximately 5×7 and matted with backing to 8×10 inches.

I am a studio potter working in NYC. My goal is to integrate form, function and surface in a way that brings a sense of excitement to my work. The pots combine thrown, altered and hand built sections which are made separately and then assembled. They are majolica on terra cotta. Majolica is a gaze tradition that began in the Middle East in the 9th century. Using this surface treatment, I strive for lively expression of line, pattern and color.

I start by purchasing dyed and undyed wool roving; other natural fibers, such as hemp, for variation in texture; and synthetic fibers, such as mylar, for metallic effects. I then produce all of my work by hand using the needle-felting technique: shaping the wool by hand and punching it with a single barbed needle to cause the fibers to mesh and hold the shape. All of my designs are original. They can all be made either to stand upright, or with a ribbon to hang as a holiday ornament.

My work is inspired by nature. With each piece of jewelry I would like the viewer to be reminded in some way of the natural world, whether it is an actual shape from nature, such as my leaf earrings; or a subtle reminder using color, style of bead or overall feel of the piece. I work organically with wire and beads first creating a shape from wire, hammering, and then using wire wrapping to add beads. I recently started working with sheet metal using foldforming and air chasing techniques, again designing as I work, so each piece is unique. I purchase most of the beads I use, they are all Czechoslovakian glass beads, semiprecious stone, or Japanese glass seed beads. I also recycle beads from antique jewelry and incorporate found pieces of sea glass into my work. I purchase the earwires, they are silver plated, nickel free.

I work in all types of clay, and in small and large scale. Craft-making techniques include combined wheel & hand-formed pieces, and wheel & pulled-form architectural assemblies. My assemblies of multiple thrown, pulled, extruded, and sculpted elements into larger thematic structures are unique in the craft, and reflect the sensibilities of my combined engineering and artistic background. I am inspired by Greek and 19th century ceramic design, and strive to integrate natural forms with classic ceramic styles. My goal is to produce pleasing, functional products; more useful, unique, and better designed than anything commercially available.

I love to work with color and fabric. To create my quilts I carefully select thin strips of cotton fabric and piece them through the batting onto the back to create abstract landscapes. The bindings are all hand finished. In some of my recent quilts, I intensely quilt on top to give even more substance and texture. I do all the work myself in my studio in Shelburne Falls, MA.

I create collectible plush toys in crochet. My line of plush is called Sugar Pop Crochet. The toys I design and make are intended for “kids†of all ages. My line includes, first and foremost, dolls and bears intended as collector’s pieces. The line also includes plushes intended as playthings, as well as plush ornaments, and wearable plush accessories. All the plushes are my own original designs, and all are made from start to finish with my own hand, in my tiny crochet room. Each design begins as a drawing, and I then draft the stitch pattern and proceed to stitch and sew and stuff the piece.

My decorative and functional textile baskets bring a contemporary twist to the ancient art of basketry. They are created using premium quality hand-dyed, hand-painted and cotton fabrics and are available in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. They are made entirely by the artist with attention to quality in every detail. Each hand-cut strip of fabric is firmly wrapped around an industrially braided cord and secured with a sturdy zig-zag stitch, leaving no raw edges to ravel- just a smooth durable finish, inside and out. They are sturdy and attractive enough to use every day for a variety of purposes, and may be lightly brushed, vacuumed, sponged or spot cleaned as needed.

My involvement with the “plein air” tradition actually started many years ago as an undergraduate. Although we didn’t use that exact terminology at the time, the outdoor painting classes required by the art department were definitely my initiation to creating on location. I was intrigued from the start, and now prefer that methodology almost exclusively. Nothing else even comes close to inspiring me in the same way. The sensory involvement from actually being at the painting site seems to be the necessary spark for the beginning of my creative journey. It is only when this becomes impossible that I turn to the still life setup in the studio for my inspiration.
The fluidity of oils paints with their translucency and richness of color is such a perfect medium for this approach. I need to make decisions quickly and yet have the opportunity for all those “corrections” that follow. Often, I struggle , not just with the elements themselves but with the challenge to “capture” that moment in time At the present, I work fairly small and use a rather limited palette of colors. My French easel also helps to keep the process somewhat simple.
When the timing is right, when the many facets of this challenging medium come together, I feel successful. It is with great anticipation that I approach the next painting location and the opportunity to share with others a part of my personal observations and experiences.
The goal for me, is always the same; to take these experiences and capture them in my own unique way so that I might touch those who happen upon my work. I invite you to enjoy the fruits of my artistic journey and become a part of the creative process.

All of my jewelry is handcrafted by me in my Maine island studio. I make fold-formed, enameled copper earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, as well as original one-of-a-kind silver jewelry from Precious Metal Clay.
Some of the enameled pieces are one-of-a-kind, such as the dogwood flower necklace. Because each petal is hand drawn on the copper and cut, then assembled with one or two other layers of hand drawn and cut petals with brass micro fasteners, no two necklaces are exactly alike.
All of my enamel work is kiln-fired on both sides, and all earwires, chain, and most clasps are handmade by me from sterling silver. Bracelets have locking sterling silver clasps.

“Color has always been the prime focus of my work. It had been very important in my painting, and when I realized I could achieve even richer color, and texture as well, in weaving, I knew I had found my medium.” Carol Furtado received her BFA in painting and ceramics from the University of Michigan.
During her four decades as a fiber artist, Carol has acquired a strong reputation as a creator of distinctive wearable art. A dramatic palette of colors uniquely characterizes her work. Currently she is creating handwoven hats, berets, and scarves; beaded and embroidered pins; and knitted and wrapped necklaces. Her newest work includes dyed and discharged jackets and unique nuno felted scarves, shawls and hats.

I hand felt all of my work; also often hand dye wool and silk either before or after garment construction. Other materials include soap and water. All garments are seamless and one of a kind. I sometimes upcycle or purchase printed silks. I merchandise from my studio during Western Avenue Artist Association Open Studios on the first Saturday of the month; and at various craft shows during the fall and winter months.

The design of my quilts is improvised and they are meticulously machine-pieced and hand-quilted. They can be hung (I will attach a hanging sleeve if one is desired) but they are sturdy, functional objects — made to be used and (gently) washed. They are 100% cotton and the edges are double-bound by hand. I make all my work myself and produce about 4-6 quilts a year. I do not have merchandise practices, yet!

I am a self-taught needle felter and wet felter. I enjoy making practical items, such as wool dryer balls, but I love devoting time to making unusual and whimsical felted items, such as needle felted cupcake pincushions, baby mobiles, or wearable pins. All designs are my own – I do not use templates – and all items are slightly different, making them one of a kind. I love bright, bold colors. All work is made by me, by hand.

I am a traditional potter, working from a studio at Erector Square. I make primarily functional pieces, although I use many techniques, from carving the clay to sculpting detail on it, from careful painting of underglazes to splashing glazes together. I generally make my own high fire glazes, although recently I have experimented with commercial glazes which are fired to a mid range temperature. Some of my work is handbuilt, but most is created on the wheel. I avoid straight lines, and I love generous, swirling, circular forms. I sell my work during City Wide Open Studio, and from my own home. I have some pieces at the Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook, Connecticut.

The techniques I use include needle felting, wet felting, embroidery, hand sewing, machine sewing and dyeing. My studio has been zero waste since 1998. Joyo is run by husband and wife team, Damian and Jenn Liddiard. We make wood jewelry, accessories, and small home goods by combining cutting edge technology with traditional handcraft techniques. Combining Jenn’s background in graphic design and jewelry fabrication and Damian’s background as an architect, we work at the intersection of art and technology to create clean, modern pieces.
Our latest work begins with Jenn’s hand drawn illustrations. She then finishes these digitally and laser etches the designs into wood. The pieces are then cleaned, sanded, hand painted, and sealed. The final step is making each piece into earrings, necklaces, or bracelets. We do all this work ourselves in our home studio in Scituate, MA.
We source our wood, chains, ear wires, and aluminum from US based suppliers and manufacturers.

I have been sewing teddy bears and toys since 1979. I joined the League of N>H> Craftsmen in 1988 and had a booth at their annual 9 day fair for 23 years. The fair is the oldest craft fair in the nation. These days i have my work (about 400 items) in the fair’s co-operative tent and almost sell out. Plus in the league’s 8 state-wide stores. Recently I have started making catnip cat beds and they have sold like hot cakes. Also of course catnip mice (I grow my own catnip for these). Still make mohair bears and many other favorite children’s animal toys, like mice, rabbits, puppies and cats. I do all the work myself. 1300 items last year and sew 6 days a week.

My husband and I are the artists/designers. The November Sky line is designed and created in our studio in NY and was inspired by the gorgeous sunsets we see right outside our studio door every November. We start with sheet copper and the pieces are cut into various shapes with either a shear or with our proprietary punches made just for our designs by Art in our studio. The brass is applied using an oxyacetylene torch, and then the surface is polished. Two coats of industrial lacquer are applied to protect the final finish. We do not make the 14 kt gold filled ear wires or the chain in house.

I hand dye silk with Shibori techniques to make scarves, shawls, neck ties, bow ties and other accessories, in a wide range of colors and designs. My methods include folding and clamping shapes to the fabric, or wrapping the fabric around a pole or rope, before submerging it in a dye bath. I hand mix all my colors from powdered, professional grade, non toxic dyes. I conserve energy in every step of my work, and power my studio with solar panels. Some of the fabric cutting and sewing (for the neck and bow ties and rosettes) is done by part time assistants who are students at Mass College of Art. All work is done in my studio either by me or under my close supervision.

I design and make all my work myself in my home-based studio, and have for 30 years now! I work with wire and make basketry, sculpture, and jewelry, often incorporating vintage beads, found objects, or paper in the artwork’s design and construction. All the wirework is done via “cold fusion”– that is, I don’t use solder/glue– I weave with the wire, and I have lots of pliers to help me crimp end pieces. When I create wire + paper baskets or jewelry, I do use a glue mixture to adhere the papers together. I first learned to create traditional basketry at CAW when living in New Haven (around 1992) because I wanted to make baskets out of alternative materials. About 5 years later when I had moved back to Seattle, I figured out how I could adapt traditional basketry techniques to wirework, and have been expanding on that idea since. I sell my wirework in galleries and museum stores throughout the country. Please take a look at my website, www.sallyprangley.com to see and learn more!

I work mostly with plaster, paper, polymer clay, and anything else I can get my hands on. I work alone and make my creations by hand using the least amount of bought supplies unless i need basic materials.
I love recycled products to up scale and mix with my creative bohemian style. I dabble in jewelry and accessories, create home accents and decor, and mostly unique Latin style shrines and boxes.
I tend towards the colorful and bohemian style but art for me is on a whim, you never know what my next artistic phase will bring about. Some of my art adds splashes of color and humor to areas of your home or office to add some fun and happiness.
I believe you must let your inner guide decide what you need in your personal space, so I make the shrines interactive, leaving spaces open for you to incorporate your own personal touch.
All my items are OOAK ( one of a kind) pieces of art.

I hand make everything using mostly hand dyed silk and wool. Using the traditional wet felting method, fiber is laid out and warm soapy water is applied. Friction is then used to begin the process of fusing the fibers together to form a non woven fabric.
My pieces are created with design and texture in mind, so each piece is unique, adding both whimsy, sophistication, color and style.

I find rare vintage elements, beads, crystals, pearls, chains and findings that I have plated in 18K gold or sterling silver. I then re-purpose and combine them, and sometimes even deconstruct them, to create simple, refined, contemporary jewelry. Described as being organic, simple and worldly yet sophisticated. Inspired by nature, jewelry of other cultures and my favorite periods throughout art history.
All of the elements in my designs are vintage pieces, with the exception of some simple findings like chains & clasps that I buy new. I have all my pieces plated in Rhode Island. I also design my own custom shapes that I have cast in Rhode Island as well.

My pottery is made in my Madison studio solely by me. All my work is porcelain or stoneware which is wheel-thrown and high-fired. All pieces are designed for use in the kitchen and dining room and are oven-safe with lead-free glazes. “From Form to Function” is the name of the course which I teach at the Guilford Art Center and this is the focus of my work in clay. Curerently, my pottery is mainly sold through two annual studio sales and through the shops of the schools in which I teach.

I recently began a business based on my love for home decor that incorporates both of my cultures, on seeing that I am Kenyan American. I love bold colors and a combination of tribal and modern aesthetics in my work. I create things that are both beautiful and functional. I hand-make a variety of things but included in this application are headbands large($20) and small ($15) and cloth napkins (lunch and cocktail).
Because I am a sole proprietor I haven’t had to outsource any of my production yet but as I gain momentum, I plan to enlist a seamstress to assist me with some of the sewing. Also, most of my materials are usually sourced from shopkeepers around the country, but do I enjoy supporting both local and small businesses wherever possible.

All designs and patterns are created exclusively by me. The crafting of each piece is also done solely by me. Materials used (glass, solder, copper foil, etc.) are purchased at the factory, retail outlets, or online by me.
I work from a home studio overlooking the Farm River Estuary, which inspires much of my work.
I also repurpose items purchased at thrift stores and flea markets and replace the glass, either in a new pattern or with singular, striking pieces. This transforms the item into something completely new.

All work is made my me. I have been a handweaver and dyer since 1978. These scarves and shawls are all hand woven and hand dyed. My loom has 24 harnesses instead of the more usual 4 or 8. This allows me to design highly complex structures, and to combine them in a single piece for intriguing variations in scale, texture, and motif. My designs are original, unique, and innovative, with images inspired by nature, modernism, and the fabrics of Latin American, Central Asia, and Africa. Guided by the weave structure, I select silk fibers to maximize visual impact and to balance drape and stability. Hand-dying my yarns gives me complete control of my color palette. My passion is to create refined scarves and shawls that are beautiful to look at and comfortable to wear.
