Printmaking

Exploring Paper Lithography

In person

Maura Galante

All Levels

Also known as Xerox transfer, paper lithography is a variation of traditional lithography and relies on the play of oil and water on paper. It offers an immediate and non-toxic printmaking process that can incorporate photography, digital designs, and hand drawn illustrations. Plates can be made using an everyday laser printer or copier, then reworked or added to with a variety of tools like ballpoint pens, crayons and markers. The plate is then inked with oil-based ink and run through a press. Image embellishments will include Chine collé, monotype techniques, and hand coloring. First-time printers as well as artists with photography and drawing experience will enjoy this workshop. The tuition for this class includes a materials fee of $10. Urauchi Mounting

In person

Margot Rocklen

All Levels

Give your prints and artworks a new lease on life through the traditional Japanese technique of Urauchi mounting. Perfect for artists and printmakers, this 2-day workshop focuses on flattening warped or wrinkled works and/or adding interest by mounting them on decorative Asian papers. On the first day, students will observe a detailed demonstration of the Urauchi process-wetting the artwork, applying rice paste, and carefully adhering the piece to a durable backing paper before stretching it on a board to dry. Participants will then mount a small work of their own. Don’t have artwork in need of flattening or enhanced margins? Pre-warped paper will be available for you to use. On day two, you’ll release your dried, now-flat work from the stretcher board and have a chance to mount additional pieces for practice. The session wraps up with group discussion, troubleshooting, and guidance on continuing the process at home. A rare chance to learn a meticulous craft that bridges fine
