Make-a-long Sing-a-long: Book Artist Peter Thomas

Join us for an afternoon of artistic celebration with Peter Thomas. Peter is a nationally recognized book artist from Santa Cruz, CA. He is known for his miniature books, his hand papermaking, and his letterpress printing. He is a player of the ukulele, an experienced & creative teacher, and author of Making More Books By Hand and 1000 Artists’ Books. He will start the afternoon by giving an illustrated talk titled “Beyond the Codex”, sharing some of the many innovative books and unique binding structures made during the 40 years of his work with Donna Thomas. Following will be a musical interlude filled with “book arts” folk song (and you can sing-along if you like). Then, using only scissors, he will teach you how to make a binding structure he calls the non-adhesive, miniature, dowel spine portfolio. This can hold business card size ephemera, artist cards, poetry, and whatever else fits! Everyone will go home with this as a memento of the time we spend together. So, bring

“Mature Poets Steal”: A Generative Poetry Workshop

Unleash a Spectrum of Hues in Your Prints.  Are you ready to explore the vibrant world of color in your printmaking practice? This workshop dives deep into the exciting possibilities of incorporating multiple colors into your prints. Understand how to select and combine colors effectively to evoke mood, create depth, and enhance the visual impact of your prints. This class will focus on collagraph and monotype printing, but the principals can be applied to any printmaking technique. Students will learn color theory using color systems color mixing and layering using a variety of techniques a multi-plate registration and trouble shooting multiple ways of creating color in prints: inking techniques and chine colle. Beginning Boxmaking: The Slipcase

Make a box for a book. Create a slipcase that fits your book snugly while leaving the title and spine in full view. Learn the basics of box making using the tools of our fully equipped bindery. The design and functional aspects of your box, measuring and cutting binder’s board, paper and cloth, and the challenges of gluing are all topics that will be covered during the class.  This is a course for both beginners and those with some experience. Many of the basic skills of bookbinding will be taught including measuring, cutting, folding, and gluing. Intermediate students may continue with ongoing projects.  Enrollment in this class includes one 3 hour monitored open bench session a week. The tuition for this class includes a fee of $6 for basic materials provided by CAW. This class will take place in a studio accessed by a flight of stairs.
