Give your delicate prints and artworks on Asian paper a new lease on life through the traditional Japanese technique of Urauchi mounting. Perfect for artists and printmakers, this two-day workshop focuses on restoring and preserving wrinkled or warped pieces using time-honored materials and methods.
On the first day, students will observe a detailed demonstration of the Urauchi process—wetting the artwork, applying rice paste, and carefully adhering it to a durable backing paper before stretching it on a board to dry. Participants will then mount a small piece of their own. Don’t have artwork in need of flattening? We’ll provide wrinkled Asian papers to practice on.
On day two, you’ll release your dried, now-flat work from the stretcher board and have the chance to mount additional pieces of various sizes. The session wraps up with group discussion, troubleshooting, and guidance on continuing the process at home.
A rare chance to learn a meticulous, meditative craft that bridges fine art and preservation.
Tuition for this class includes a fee of $40 for basic materials provided by CAW.
