Start with three colors for a monochromatic version and then expand your palette for a full color portrait. Students are welcome to use oil or acrylic paints. Individual attention will be given to each student and there will be examples of other artist’s work to support the ideas.

Students who withdraw 48 hours prior to the first class are eligible for a refund or credit toward another class, less a $25 registration fee.

Oil Paints: Windsor and Newton flake white hue or other white Burnt sienna Ultramarine blue For later color: Lemon yellow (Daler Rowney 651 is best or Windsor and Newton Lemon Yellow) Yellow ochre Manganese violet Alizarin crimson Cobalt blue (Pure not hue) Raw umber Other suggestions: Cadmium Red Viridian Green Burnt Umber Paynes Grey Chromium Oxide Green (Bring other colors if you have them) Odorless paint thinner (Gamsol is best) Refined linseed oil Small painting cup with lid for dipping in medium on palette Larger jar with tight lid for washing brushes in thinner 2 stretched canvases or board approx 18" x 15" Paint brushes: 1 size 4, 1 size 6 natural bristle filbert A trowel (or diamond) shaped palette knife A wooden, plastic or preferably glass palette (if glass, tape a piece of mid-toned grey paper showing through underneath, approx 16" x 12"), or grey palette paper paper towels (and t-shirt rags if possible)
