Students in this class are going to design and build their own music box, in order to learn and practice simple metal working technics like welding, grinding and a simple mechanical joint.
Each student will be given one music box mechanism and a piece of paper to design their music box. During the designing process they will need to figure out the structure of the box. That includes shape, size, placement of the mechanism and the hinge system of the lid, as well as deciding which tools they will need to execute their idea.
After designing, fabrication starts by preparing and cutting materials, and continues by putting everything together. During that time, they can explore variations of techniques to decorate and customize their box.
Finally, they will assemble, finalize and clear coat the box so they can take it home with them.
Includes one 3-hour weekly practice session during monitored practice hours.
The tuition for this class includes a materials fee of $40.
