Introduction to Painting

Learn how artists observe and interpret their surroundings, translating what they see into thoughtful, well-constructed paintings. Through creating and arranging their own still lifes, participants will explore composition, light, and spatial relationships while painting objects within specific settings and lighting conditions. Instruction will focus on color identification and mixing, understanding value, and learning to simplify and generalize forms to create clear, cohesive images. Emphasis will also be placed on considering objects in relation to the space around them—an essential skill for confident, expressive painting. This foundational class is designed for new and returning students who wish to develop the skills needed to work independently in oil or acrylic. Please bring a tube of red, yellow, blue, white, and black paint, along with a bristle brush, to the first session. Tuition for this class includes a fee of $10 for newsprint and charcoal provided by CAW. School

Four Images: A Memoir Workshop in Kishōtenketsu

Explore how four carefully chosen moments from your life can reveal the hidden architecture of your story. Using the Japanese narrative structure of Kishōtenketsu—introduction, development, twist, and reconciliation—students will learn to show rather than tell, applying both poetic precision and prose excellence to transform visual memory into memoir. Across three sessions, students will move from content creation to selection and from drafting to revision. Discover how seemingly disconnected moments connect across time, how the fourth image can illuminate what the first three couldn't say alone. Through contemporary workshop methods and sustained attention to craft, you'll train in both generous critique and fearless revision, learning to trust that your images already know your story, you just need to help them speak. Love photography but are intimidated by modern digital cameras? We have developed a simple but powerful approach to using any DSLR or Mirrorless camera. Students will be shooting great photos right away. Learn how to “see the light” and use it to enhance your images. Included is instruction in digital photo editing and printing your own photographs on our Canon 1100 printer. For Fine Art prints, we can mount your photography on archival mat board. This is a fantastic introduction to pottery and a great way to get to know CAW’s studio. Spend your Saturday afternoon in the Creative Arts Workshop pottery studio. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn hand building techniques and be guided through throwing clay on the wheel. You’ll also discover how to embellish your pieces with surface textures and glaze finishes. Come join us and get creative! No experience necessary, all levels welcome. Pottery tool kits are available for sale in the studio for $27. Firing fees are $3.50/pound. Payable by credit card, cash or check. All materials and tools provided. Wear clothes that can get messy.
