Versatile Clay Craft

Whether you are a beginner or are already well on your way to mastering the art of working with clay, there is always more to learn. This week will focus on honing students’ skills on the wheel, exploring hand-building with slabs and coils, and experimenting with sgraffito and other forms of texturing. Students may work on independent- or instructor-suggested projects. A visit to the Yale Art Gallery is included.

Screen Printing: Beginner and Intermediate A

Spend the week exploring multiple forms of screen printing. Students may work from their own designs and photos to print T-shirts, create multicolor landscapes, portraits, and watercolor screen prints. Students should bring T-shirts to print on as needed.

Suggested ages: 12-17

Draw in Perspective

Gul Rukh Selim

Learn to draw in perspective. Architectural drafts, book illustrations, and comics use perspective techniques such as foreshortened effects, bird’s-eye views, and scenes where objects seem to disappear into the distant horizon. Explore one-, two-, and three-point perspectives and how colors change in perspective. Begin drawing objects and each other in the studio, and then move outdoors to practice skills drawing cityscapes using pencils, soft pastels, and watercolors.

Teen Metal

Connie Pfeiffer

Learn basic metalworking techniques to create mini sculptures and jewelry. Saw, hammer, forge, stamp, fold, rivet, and solder copper sheet and wire. Students will use hand tools and a gas torch (one-on-one with instructor) to make metal malleable and solder pieces together as needed. 2-D and 3-D forms will be explored, including organic shapes, vessels, spheres, and boxes.

New Haven Arts Inside and Out

Philip Levine

Explore the diversity of arts through greater New Haven. View architecture in and around Yale and study art history at the Yale University Art Gallery for observational drawing. All sites are within walking distance from CAW. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are drawing days at CAW. On Tuesday visit the Yale University Art Gallery, and on Thursday visit architecture around Yale. Students should bring snacks and a lunch.

Clay Creations

Gul Rukh Selim

Work from images and imaginations to create fun objects and figures out of clay. Skills including pinching, coiling, and slab-building, as well as modeling, carving, texturing, and glazing will be taught. Come away with one-of-a-kind glazed and fired 3-D creations to treasure forever. New and experienced artists are welcome.

Quilt Camp

Robin Green

Learn to sew and make a quilt through basic sewing machine instruction and an introduction to both improvisational and patchwork piecing. The finished quilt tops will be backed, basted, and hand-tied. Over the course of the week, students will also look at examples of incredible quilts and watch the Emmy-award winning, 1-hour documentary on the quilt makers of Gee’s Bend, Alabama.
