Asian Brush Painting

with Lily Forbush

Chinese brush painting is an ancient art form that grew out of calligraphy (4000 b.c.). Combining drawing and water media skills, the practice evolved in many other Asian regions, including Japan and Korea. In this introductory class, you will learn through simple exercises and techniques the richness and harmony of this beautiful and relaxing art form. There will be demonstrations, and we will paint subjects including orchids bamboo and animals. Students are welcome to choose, and bring in, their own natural objects to paint. No experience necessary.

Note: Ink and rice paper provided by CAW.

Supplies: Chinese brushes, at least 1/4 -1/2 inch wide, Asian ink stick, ink stone, watercolor or gouache (New Gamboge, Crimson, Burnt Sienna, French Ultramarine Blue and Vermilion)

Josef Albers’ Colors Brought to Life

with Fritz Horstman

Working directly from student recollections and from Albers’ teaching notes from the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College and Yale University, participants approach color with open eyes. Through exercises such as “make three colors become four” and “four color worlds,” the abstract and subjective nature of color, this workshop is useful to all artists — those focused on color and those focused elsewhere.

Expressive Drawing II

This class is designed for those who want to continue developing ways of self-expression. Participants learn different techniques to help break preconceived knowledge of art and expand their own personal artistic discovery. Various media including but not limited to charcoal, graphite, inks, acrylic, markers, needle and thread, and wax resist will be used when working independently. Additional instruction incorporated in a powerpoint presentation showcasing contemporary artists who work in an expressive way to inspire and push the limits of each participants’ creativity.

Introduction to Drawing

with Lawrence Morelli

In this class students will learn the fundamentals that make drawing easier. Using pencil and charcoal, students will use still life compositions to study the spatial relationships that exist between objects. Contour line exercises, simple rules of perspective along with shading will teach students that drawing is fun.

Introduction to Watercolor

Encaustic Painting: Fuse, Flow & Fun

This course will introduce participants to painting with a medium that begins to harden the moment it leaves the heated palette. Learn about wax and medium, painting and fusing, working the surface to achieve various textures, substrate options, archival issues, and safe studio practices. In addition, participants will learn how to incorporate their prints, learn multiple transfer techniques, and investigate the sculptural qualities that encaustic offers.

Introduction to Illustration

Introduction to Painting

Don’t be intimidated any longer. Come learn to paint! This class will unfold the mysteries of painting by introducing participants to the basics. Instruction will be provided in the selection of materials, setting up a palette, handling of paint, and composing a picture. Study will emphasize learning to see what you wish to paint simply with the goal of rendering form clearly in terms of color and design. Come to the first class ready to paint.

Basic Drawing Continued

This class is for individuals who have begun exploring drawing and are interested in pursuing it more deeply. Students will experiment with charcoal, conte, and other drawing media while continuing emphasis will be placed on composition, perspective, and value. Subject matter will include still life, flowers, and interiors. Course includes three visits to the Peabody Museum.

Acrylic Painting

Painting with acrylic is easy and fun. Work quickly and spontaneously with this versatile and inexpensive medium. Paint from observation, mix dazzling tones while learning to see color and light, and create forms and spaces that pop.

Creative Watercolor

This class will inspire watercolor participants to explore new and exciting ways to paint. Using watercolor paint and compatible water media, participants will be introduced to creative techniques and compositional exercises designed to encourage them to loosen up in both traditional and abstract compositions. Intermediate and advanced students are welcome.

Interpreting the Figure through Drawing

This class is for participants interested in exploring drawing in an immediate and unconventional way. Develop personal approaches using charcoal in a variety of techniques to draw from the live model. The instructor offers general guidelines to the group and then work with each student individually. Open Studio

Working From A Model

with Candace Klein

Join us to draw or paint from the live model. Work through ideas, improve, and refine observational and figure drawing skills. Work in any medium you choose. This four hour session includes multiple, mixed length poses. Call the office for reservation prior to session.

Note: Students must call ahead to reserve a seat 24 hours in advance. Pay $15 fee to the Instructor each session.
