Basic Hand Bookbinding: Two Case Bindings

Paulette Rosen

This is the class for you if you want to make a “real book.” Each student will focus on making one of two case bindings: either the traditional case binding, (which is a hardcover book with lots of pages sewn together and a rounded or flat spine with headbands,) or the Bradel case binding, (which has a flat back, a handsome false groove,) and is suitable for slimmer volumes. Instruction is adjusted to the binding skill of the individual. Includes one 3-hour monitored open bench session each week.

Supplies: None required; however, students may bring personal bookbinding tools if they have them.

Prerequisite: Basic Hand Bookbinding I, the equivalent, or permission of the instructor.

Tuesdays, 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM, 3/19 – 4/23
6 sessions: $234; Early Bird price: $222 (Discount available until 2/15/2019)

The Longstitch

Paulette Rosen

Make two lovely blank books bound in the longstitch style, an exposed sewing technique where decorative stitches embellish the book’s spine. One book will be covered in heavyweight paper and the second in softcover leather, which may include a beaded spine. This sturdy structure travels well, makes an excellent sketchbook or journal as it opens flat and can be made without special equipment. Includes one 3-hour monitored open bench session a week.

Supplies: Nothing required however, students may bring personal book binding tools if they have them.

Prerequisite: None.

Tuesdays, 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM, 4/30 – 6/4

Introduction to Paper Marbling

Regina and Dan St. John

The wondrous process of marbling involves the capturing of an intricate intermingling of colors from the surface of a liquid. The pattern is then caught permanently when paper or fabric is briefly laid onto the liquid. This step-by-step acrylic paper marbling workshop is ideal for a beginner, but includes many innovations to challenge an experienced marbler. Students will work on full-size professional marbling tanks and learn how to use sets of precision marbling tools as they are introduced to a wide range of traditional and contemporary marbling patterns and techniques. Students will depart with their own leather-edge marbled journal and many marbled papers in a spectacular array of patterns and colors. All materials will be supplied for these classes, and students may expect to complete from 25-35 papers during the two-day class. Materials fee of $45 payable at registration.

Supplies: Please bring an apron.

Supplies Provided: All materials and tools provided by these visiting instructors
