Mastering Composition and Lighting in Photography

The key to better images is mastering basics of composition and lighting. This is true not only for photography, but drawing and painting as well. We will focus on the commonality of great composition in the visual arts via the medium of photography. We will use both natural and artificial lighting both indoors and outside. We will first cover the basics of digital photography and then move on to crafting your images. At least one session will include a model. You will learn to process your Images using a simple Adobe Lightroom workflow with our on-site iMacs. This course also offers optional practice sessions between classes, held on Thursdays from 6-9 pm. Tuition includes a fee of $20 for basic materials provided by CAW. Saturday Sketching

Explore, learn, and practice drawing exercises and techniques in a supportive environment. Increase visual perception, skills and confidence, and develop your unique style. Work with drawing pencils, charcoal, pastels, watercolor and ink/pens. Weekly demos and exercises include mark-making, line, value, form, texture and shading. Subjects include animals, everyday objects, portraits, nature, as well as students’ interests. We draw from observation, references and imagination. All materials provided. Join us! Introduction to Black and White Analog Film Photography

Explore the art of black and white film photography. Drawing inspiration from professional photographers, students will learn to analyze images with a focus on light, composition, and meaning. Gain experience operating a 35mm camera, developing film, and printing black and white images in the darkroom. Through demonstrations, assignments, critiques, and guided lab work, you'll refine your photography skills and creative vision. The class also includes an optional open lab practice session where students can work on and refine the techniques discussed in class. Forager’s Sampler

Have you pocketed little treasures on walks and wondered what you'll do with those finds? Celebrate the forager in your heart as we create a hand-stitched sampler book filled with gathered bits and patterned stitches. Learn several basic embroidery (or visible mending) stitches and how to integrate your found objects onto up-cycled fabric swatches mounted on paper. Each embroidered piece can stand alone as a notecard or become part of a folded paper accordion book. Students will learn a selection of decorative stitches, complete as many sampler pieces as time allows, and take home enough supplies to complete 5 embroidered swatches. If you are familiar with basic hand-stitching, you can learn more advanced stitches. No sewing or book binding experience required. This class will take place in a studio accessed by a flight of stairs. Fundamentals of Painting

Observe forms and their relationships while learning to mix colors and apply oil or acrylic paint in various ways on canvas or board. See and paint shapes and spaces in dynamic arrangements you set up yourself. Use phone cameras and viewfinders to help compose your subject and look closely at other artists' works. Advanced Etching Techniques

Explore techniques such as photoresist processes, aquatint layering, and detailed screen transfers. We will cover using both photographic images as well as hand-drawn images that can be printed directly to metal. Learn how to prepare images, adhere film, and study exposure, development, etching, and printing.
