The Magic Box

Learn how to make a Magic Box — a lidded box with compartments, based on the structure used in a Jacob’s Ladder. Depending on how the box is opened, different compartments are hidden and revealed. All materials will be provided.
Prerequisite: One bookbinding or box making class or equivalent experience.

So you have a tablet or a smartphone, and you’d like to explore drawing and painting apps? We’ll look at the options, then put the apps to the test. The iPad inspired David Hockney, and it can work for you! Students must provide their own digital tablet or smartphone.
Supplies: Students must provide their own digital tablet or smartphone. We’ll download a few apps for drawing and painting — some are free; others are $5 or less.

Introduction to Natural Dyes

Explore a world of color harvested from roots, bark, leaves, and flowers! In this hands-on workshop, learn how to extract dyes from plants and how to prepare wool, cotton, and silk for dyeing. Each participant will leave with mini-skeins of yarn and silk or cotton fabric that they have dyed themselves.

Getting to Know Your Digital Camera
with Melanie Stengel

This course will focus on understanding the digital camera and composition. Students will learn to use camera controls, composition, and lighting to create visual impact and express their vision. Through demonstrations, assignments, and critiques, students will develop the techniques that allow them to transition from taking photographs to making them. (This is NOT a Photoshop class.) The goal is to get the most from your digital camera and develop your photographic eye. Class will allow time to experiment with techniques.
Supplies: Digital camera with full manual control (usually a digital single-lens reflex camera or mirrorless interchangeable lens camera). Bring your manual to the first class.
Prerequisite: No previous photography experience is necessary. Students should read the “Getting Started” section of their camera manual and bring the manual to class.

Sculpture
The Uncarved Block
with Sharon Didato
Level: All Levels
Explore the fundamental principles of subtractive sculpture in the round. Students will create a series of simple 3D sketches from an idea, photo, or drawing to produce a complete sculpture from plaster block. We will investigate various carving techniques, surface textures, and finishes. Remove the nonessential to reveal the essential form within the uncarved block.
Supplies: Bring photos, ideas, or objects from which to draw inspiration.

April Vacation Art Program
with Eva Scopino
Level: Ages 7-11
Join us for a week of adventures in art! Creative, fun, thought-provoking projects in clay, drawing, painting, collage, papier mache, and more. Explore a variety of art materials and techniques. Learn and create in a studio environment with other young people who enjoy making art. On Friday, we’ll have a student art exhibition and celebration for families and friends. Includes a daily snack.

Build a Birdhouse with a Buddy
with Philip Levine
Level: Ages 7-11 with an adult
Build a real wooden birdhouse that will last for years. Use precut, high-quality building materials: solid wood, galvanized nails and screws, and 20-year roofing material. We’ll include a door on the bottom, so that the house can be cleaned. Work together to create and build a family project and lasting memories. Bring a pint of outdoor paint for your birdhouse; all other materials supplied. We’ll construct the birdhouse during the workshop, and begin painting if time allows. Painting will be finished at home.
Supplies: A pint of outdoor paint in any color.
