Painted Paper Magical Creatures

Paint, print, scratch, and stamp sheets of paper to create various textures and patterns. Instructor will demonstrate ideas for drawing different mythical creatures such as dragons, griffins, mermaids, and unicorns. Cut shapes from your painted paper and put them together to create fabulous creatures. A drawing game will be played to create your own imaginary animals.

Asian Brush Painting
Gul Rukh Selim
Use Asian brushes and watercolors or tempera to paint nature-inspired images such as flowers, animals and trees, grasses and bamboo. Achieve multiple effects by learning how to hold the brush, place the brush on the paper, apply paint with different strokes, as well as loading paint on brushes in distinct ways to achieve specific beautiful effects–all in the tradition of Asian Art.

Drawing Castles

Learn to draw castles using shapes, forms, shading, and visual texture. Share ideas from your imagination for details such as who are the rulers, backgrounds, inhabitants, and animals. Draw a self-portrait as ruler of the castle.

Art, Mindfulness, and Nature
Judie Cavanaugh
Incorporate nature, yoga, and mindfulness into art lessons. Session A will focus on yoga poses with names similar to animals. Then, students will create 2-D and 3-D gesture drawings based on the yoga poses with various drawing materials and sculpt different poses using aluminum foil. Session B will focus on sun salutation yoga flow followed by mandala drawing and painting. Session C will focus on unicorn, butterfly, flower and rainbow poses and students will create marbled paper and an accordion book. Sign up for one, two, or all three sessions below!

Mini Objects with Baker’s Clay

Make baker’s clay (guided by the instructor) then explore ideas for making small objects from the clay such as faces, simple figures, mini food, and/or cutouts. Bake bake them in your oven, and once cooled, decorate the pieces using markers and/or poster paint, watercolor, or acrylic paints. American artist, teacher, and activist Ruth Asawa, who uses baker’s clay, will be discussed.

Clay Creations from Around the World
Gul Rukh Selim
Explore the richness of clay toys from around the world while learning how children all over the world make and play with clay toys. Students will work from images and their imaginations and learn skills including pinching, coiling, as well as modeling, carving, and texturing. The focus for Session A will be on kokoshi, Russian, and Bangladeshi dolls. Session B will focus on animals including elephants, horses, dogs, cats, lizards, and dragons.

Picasso Clay Play

Picasso liked to experiment in his art. In the first session, students will look at examples of his clay art and then using imaginations, create clay faces and animals, inspired by Picasso’s ceramics. In the second session, students will paint them with details and patterns, and share together.

Fun with Fiber

A fun exploration of fiber, art, color, pattern, and design. Each project will be taught step-by-step with demos and will include weaving using a simple loom, stenciling, hand sewing, mini stuffies, and making pom-poms.

Perspective Drawing
Gul Rukh Selim
Learn to draw in perspective. Architectural drafts, book illustrations, and comics use perspective techniques such as foreshortened effects, bird’s-eye views, and scenes where objects seem to disappear into the distant horizon. Explore one-, two-, and three-point perspectives and how colors change in perspective. Begin drawing objects and people around your house, and then move outdoors on your own time to practice skills drawing cityscapes using pencils, soft pastels, and watercolors. Share your drawings the next day with your instructor and peers for suggestions. Remember to maintain safe social distancing when outside!

Picasso Power

Pablo Picasso is a famous artist who created many different kinds of artwork—paintings, sculptures, pottery, and drawings. He liked to experiment and try new things. Create imaginative artwork –draw, paint, and collage using clay, color, pastels, and mixed media. Learn about color mixing and creating with shapes. Let’s experiment with art.

Create a Book From One Piece of Paper

Create a book using one piece of paper and use characters and pictures to tell the story.

Clay Critters
Gul Rukh Selim
Create owls out of clay or homemade play dough. Using a rolling pin or one’s hands, form the clay into a rough flat round and watch as CAW Young People faculty member Gul Rukh Selim guides you to make it into an owl. Once it’s dried, paint it with water based Tempera paint.
Age: 4-8

Materials:
- Rolling pin or card board roll (inside of paper towel)
- Plastic knife for cutting clay and to decorate
- Air dry clay or home made play dough (recipe below)
No Cook Play Dough Recipe
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons baking soda
Warm water as needed
A few drops of food coloring if desired
Mix dry ingredients in a bowl and make a well in the middle. Pour in oil, food coloring if desired and about half cup hot water. Mix while adding more water as needed until dough comes together in a ball. Dough should feel like pie dough. Knead until pliable. You may use more flour if needed. This dough will remain pliable if stored in a jar or in several layers of plastic wrap.
