Accordion Book as a Removable Feast Materials

Materials and tools needed by students:

For first and second sessions:

  • 8 postcards or photos (or something similar, doesn’t have to be as big as a postcard, but no bigger) all the same size and orientation (vertical or horizontal)
  • 10 pieces of Canson MiTiente* or Elephant Hide paper** cut to 1” larger on all sides than your cards; color coordinate with your cards or photos
  • Tyvek – an old FedEx envelope (you can just walk into a FedEx office and pick one up. A used one, even slightly wrinkled, is fine.)
  • Thread for sewing: linen bookbinding thread or embroidery thread or similar thickness
  • A needle that fits the thread
  • Scissors
  • 12” ruler, longer if you have one (or a long, straight piece of heavy cardboard)
  • Cutting tool with a new blade (all these work: utility knife, x-acto, scalpel)
  • Cutting mat or a piece of scrap cardboard to cut on
  • Bone folder (or popsicle stick or the handle of a spoon or equivalent)
  • Sharp pencil
  • An eraser
  • Permanent glue stick
  • Glue: (all these work) Elmer’s Glue, Sobo Glue, Yes Paste, PVA, bookbinder’s mixture
  • Scrap paper to glue on (8.5 x 11” or larger)
  • Scrap of mat board for jig (about 1” wide and 2” taller than your cards)
  • Sewing cradle if you have one

*Canson MiTientes is available locally at hullsnewhaven.com (free home delivery and curbside pickup) and Artist & Craftsman Supply New Haven and dickblick.com

**Elephant Hide paper is available at talasonline.com or paperjade.com is really sturdy, thin and folds well. Get a couple of sheets of whichever paper you choose so you have extra for other variations.

  • Your book block at whatever stage
  • Scissors, cutting tool, cutting mat, bone folder, sharp pencil, eraser
  • Binder’s board, mat board, or other sturdy cardboard ) size determined by size of pages
  • Glue (all these work: permanent glue stick, Elmer’s Glue, Sobo Glue, Yes Paste, PVA, bookbinder’s mixture)
  • Brush to apply the glue
  • Decorative paper for the cover; any additional decorative scraps for the title label
  • Scrap paper (8.5 x 11” or larger to glue on)
  • 2 or more strips of paper 11 x 1” to use as measuring strips
  • Ribbon (1/8”) or string for closure if you would like
  • Book cloth (size determined by size of pages and mat board) that I will mail to you if you don’t have any
