Join artist Iyaba Ibo Mandingo on an immersive theater adventure. Make puppets with repurposed materials and explore the art of storytelling, culminating in a final theatrical production. Several skills will be explored, including hand-sewing, creating simple clothes, making patterns, and basic cobbling skills. The historical and cultural connections to how puppets are used in African and Caribbean culture will be researched and explored (e.g. Moco Jumbie, John Bull, Highlanders, playing Mask, Egungun ceremony). Our puppets will become citizens of the “Village,” an imaginary town when we use skits and poetry to teach our African-American and Caribbean community the foundations of learning (i.e. reading, writing and arithmetic) with a focus on the art of storytelling and relearning our Caribbean folklore and tales.
