This clever, complex looking but simple book structure was invented by master binder Hedi Kylein the 1980s. But anyone can make it. It uses an accordion spine with paper “flags” (or any material that works) placed in an alternating manner that, when unfolded, intertwine like magic. The pages can be examined by turning like a codex, stand for display like a sculpture, or flap like a noisemaker.
Students will be guided in folding the accordion and creating visual or text content used on the flags that work with this unique structure. The final book will have decorative hardcovers, a title, and maybe even an envelope to store it. Many basic skills of book binding will be introduced including measuring, cutting, and gluing.
Enrollment in this class includes one 3-hour monitored practice session a week.
Tuition for this class includes a fee of $3 for basic materials provided by CAW.
