Create and Explore with Clay

In person

Katherine Lux

Spend your Saturday afternoon getting creative in the Creative Arts Workshop pottery studio! This fun, hands-on workshop is a fantastic introduction to pottery and a great way to experience CAW’s studio environment. You’ll explore two foundational ceramic techniques: hand building and wheel throwing, with guidance from our instructors every step of the way. Along the way, you’ll also experiment with surface textures and glazing techniques while learning about the many stages involved in making pottery. This workshop is designed as an introduction to the ceramic process — a chance to play with clay, try new skills, and discover what pottery is all about. Because finished pottery requires multiple steps, including drying, firing, and glazing over several weeks, participants will not leave with completed ceramic pieces at the end of the session. If you do create a piece you love - fantastic.  You are then welcome to speak with the instructor about next steps to finish the project. Come

The Very Basics of Etching

In person

Maura Galante

Discover the magic of etching, a printmaking process in which lines are incised into a metal plate to create an image. Ink is worked into the grooves, the surface of the plate is carefully wiped clean, and damp paper is placed over the plate and run through a printmaking press to transfer the image onto the paper. Because the design on the plate is permanent, multiple impressions can be printed. Participants will explore both traditional etching, which uses acid, and drypoint, an acid-free intaglio technique. Please bring paper towels and an apron to class. All other materials provided. The tuition for this class includes a materials fee of $12 for basic materials provided by CAW. School Policies Students who withdraw 48 hours prior to the first class are eligible for a refund or credit toward another class, less a $25 registration fee. Please click here for more details.

The Very Basics of Relief Printmaking

In person

Maura Galante

Relief printmaking is a technique that involves carving or cutting away parts of a block or other material, leaving the raised areas to receive ink. Paper is placed over the inked surface, and the image is transferred either by hand or with a printmaking press. Since the image on the block or plate is permanent, multiple impressions can be made. We will work primarily with linoleum blocks, and other surfaces such as wood and cardboard will be discussed. The tuition for this class includes a materials fee of $12 for basic materials provided by CAW. School Policies Students who withdraw 48 hours prior to the first class are eligible for a refund or credit toward another class, less a $25 registration fee. Please click here for more details.

Japanese Woodblock (Mokuhanga) Simplified

Margot Rocklen

Learn basic Japanese woodblock skills in 3 sessions. You will plan a simple color drawing for your print, then transfer the different colors of the design to soft, easily-cut blocks. Using linoleum-cutting tools you will carve the designs into the blocks, adding traditional kento registration guides on each block, insuring that your printing paper will always align correctly. Lastly, you will have time to print your blocks using the centuries-old technique of brushing rice paste and liquid pigments directly onto the blocks. You will print the blocks consecutively by hand on an assortment of colored and textured Asian papers. If you enjoy the technique and want to learn a more complex version, you can register for an intermediate mokuhanga class where we use shina plywood blocks and cutting tools specifically designed for this method of printmaking. Includes 3-hour practice session per week during monitored practice hours. Tuition for this class includes a fee of $20 for materials

The Very Basics of Screen Printing

In person

Tung Hoang

Screen printing (also known as silkscreen or serigraphy) is a technique in which ink is pushed through a mesh screen onto paper underneath. Stencils can be placed or drawn on the screen to block the ink from reaching certain areas of the paper, creating a specific design. As long as the image remains on the screen, multiple impressions can be made. Photographic images can also be used as stencils using light sensitive emulsions. Printing in multiple colors, and silkscreen monoprints will also be discussed. The tuition for this class includes a materials fee of $10 for basic materials provided by CAW. School Policies Students who withdraw 48 hours prior to the first class are eligible for a refund or credit toward another class, less a $25 registration fee. Please click here for more details.
