Silkscreen/Serigraph Printmaking

Learn the versatile and popular craft of silkscreen/serigraph printmaking. Students will transfer photo images (photography, drawing, painting, or multimedia art) to the printing screens and print onto paper, fabric, or wood panel.  Image separations (digital and hand) to print images with more than one color as well as learning how to register multiple colors for printing will be discussed. Includes one 3-hour practice session per week during monitored practice hours. The tuition for this class includes a fee of $20 for basic materials provided by CAW. Water-based Printmaking

Explore print processes using safe water-soluble inks and novel plate supports. Develop personal imagery utilizing woodcut, linocut, monotype, monoprint, collagraph, Chine-collé, drypoint, and multiple inking and printing techniques. Experiment with innovative plate supports, archival rag and Japanese papers, non-traditional inking procedures, and other approaches to image making. All inks, rollers, plate supports, newsprint, print tools, presses, soap, and water are supplied. Some print papers are supplied and students are welcome to bring their own. Experimental Printmaking

Explore and develop designs for relief, intaglio, and monotype printmaking in this hands-on course. Class time will focus on creating original designs and concepts as students experiment with print plate substrates, including Corian®, Tetra-Pak®, vinyl records, and various recycled and found materials. Examples of different print styles will be shared to illustrate these techniques. This course is suitable for beginners and advanced students alike. Color and Design Principals in Printmaking – 1

Understanding the Language of Visual Design Beyond the technical craft of printmaking lies the art of visual communication. This class is designed for printmakers of all levels and will provide you with a deeper knowledge of design concepts, enabling you to make more informed artistic decisions and infuse your printmaking with intention and impact. This class exercises will focus on monotype, but the principals can be applied to any printmaking technique.  Through a blend of hands-on exercises, and constructive critiques, where students will learn to: explore the power of line understand how positive and negative spaces interact discover how to use light and dark tonality to create depth, emphasis, and mood add texture for visual richness understand how to see and create compositional balance In the second half of the class students will work on creating new compositions or rework past prints using design principals.  The tuition for this class includes a

Exploring Paper Lithography

Also known as Xerox transfer, paper lithography is a variation of traditional lithography and relies on the play of oil and water on paper. It offers an immediate and non-toxic printmaking process that can incorporate photography, digital designs, and hand drawn illustrations. Plates can be made using an everyday laser printer or copier, then reworked or added to with a variety of tools like ballpoint pens, crayons and markers. The plate is then inked with oil-based ink and run through a press. Image embellishments will include Chine collé, monotype techniques, and hand coloring. First-time printers as well as artists with photography and drawing experience will enjoy this workshop. The tuition for this class includes a materials fee of $10. This workshop dives deep into the exciting possibilities of incorporating multiple colors into your prints. Understand how to select and combine colors effectively to evoke mood, create depth, and enhance the visual impact of your prints. Exploring Linoleum Block Printing

Explore the art of block printing with linoleum. The instructor will demonstrate the process for carving and printing a 4” x 6” linoleum block, as well as a variety of inking and printing processes. Students will focus on developing original designs and concepts to prepare a linoleum block to ink, create a series, and print the results.  All printing will be done with water-soluble inks.  Includes one 3-hour weekly practice session during monitored practice hours. Urauchi Mounting

Give your delicate prints and artworks on Asian paper a new lease on life through the traditional Japanese technique of Urauchi mounting. Perfect for artists and printmakers, this two-day workshop focuses on restoring and preserving wrinkled or warped pieces using time-honored materials and methods. On the first day, students will observe a detailed demonstration of the Urauchi process—wetting the artwork, applying rice paste, and carefully adhering it to a durable backing paper before stretching it on a board to dry. Participants will then mount a small piece of their own. Don't have artwork in need of flattening? We'll provide wrinkled Asian papers to practice on. On day two, you'll release your dried, now-flat work from the stretcher board and have the chance to mount additional pieces of various sizes. Monotype Workshop

Monotype is the creation of a one-of-a-kind print. It is the most painterly and spontaneous of all the printmaking processes. We will experiment with a variety of materials and techniques to create a series of unique, multilayered prints with a rich variety of mark making, pattern, and texture. Both oil based inks as well as water based materials will be used, and participants will be assisted on the studio’s printmaking presses. Explore innovative approaches to printmaking using recycled Tetra-Pak® packaging as an alternative plate material. This hands-on experience introduces both intaglio and monotype techniques, with an emphasis on developing original imagery and transferring designs onto unconventional surfaces for press printing. Process demonstrations and examples of Tetra-Pak® prints will support exploration and experimentation. All inks are water-washable for easy cleanup. Plate materials and paper are provided.
