Introduction to Monotype/Monoprint Printmaking

Explore the magical process of monotype printmaking using a wide variety of techniques and materials in this exciting, mixed-media class. Students will be guided through several approaches to this most painterly of printmaking techniques, such as reductive and additive inking, stencil printing, and layering of imagery. Individual style and experimental approaches to the medium are encouraged. Students will come away from this class with several unique prints. Demonstrations as well as individualized instruction is ongoing throughout the course. Various tools and supplies provided. Open to all experience levels. Silkscreen/Serigraph Printmaking

Learn the versatile and popular craft of silkscreen/serigraph printmaking. Students will transfer photo images (photography, drawing, painting, or multimedia art) to the printing screens and print onto paper, fabric, or wood panel.  Image separations (digital and hand) to print images with more than one color as well as learning how to register multiple colors for printing will be discussed. Sunday Tetra-Pak ® Over Coffee Printmaking Workshop

Spend a Sunday afternoon in the CAW printmaking studio exploring an innovative approach to printmaking using recycled Tetra-Pak® packaging as a plate material. This one-day workshop introduces both drypoint/intaglio and monotype techniques, with a focus on mark-making, tool use, plate inking, and ink removal and treatment techniques to create a variety of print outcomes. Process demonstrations and examples of Tetra-Pak® prints will guide your experimentation. All inks are water-washable for easy cleanup, and plate materials and paper are provided. By the end of the workshop, every student will leave with a finished print. Suitable for both new and experienced printmakers—come ready to experiment and have fun! Print Day in May is an annual international celebration of printmaking taking place on the first Saturday in May. Join us in the print studio at Creative Arts Workshop as we gather with thousands of participants around the globe to recognize this special art community. Enter to win a free printmaking class or workshop at CAW! (Details to follow) Printmakers: CAW's studio is equipped for relief, intaglio, screen print, and monotype processes, and offers four printmaking presses: a 25” x 48” Takach, a 42" x 26" Takach, a 30” x 48” Charles Brand etching press, a 36” x 60” Charles Brand etching press, and a 28” x 50” motorized Charles Brand press. Participants must have printmaking experience, be familiar with working in a community studio, and may spend the time on independent projects. There is no instruction. Monotype Quilts: A Tribute to Gee’s Band

This one-day printmaking intensive draws on America’s rich quilting history and is inspired by the patterns and rhythms of the Quilts of Gee’s Bend. Students will use relief printmaking techniques to create beautiful “quilts” without sewing. Print on fabric and paper to create a stunning patchwork of vibrant hues and innovative textures. Returning students can experiment with new color palettes, add graphics or linear designs, and incorporate collage elements or natural materials. Japanese Woodblock (Mokuhanga) – Beginner and Intermediate

Rooted in centuries of tradition, this hands-on, non-toxic process uses natural materials to produce innovative and beautiful contemporary woodblock prints. Beginners will learn to design, carve, and print a small edition using hand-applied pigments, rice paste, and kento registration to achieve rich color and subtle tonal blends. Intermediate students will expand their practice by combining mokuhanga with intaglio line work and embossing, printing expressive, dimensional images using both hand printing and an intaglio press. Includes one 3-hour practice session per week during monitored practice hours.
