Documentary Photography

In person

Bud Glick

Photographer Bud Glick joins us to present his photos and discuss his work documenting New York Chinatown in the early 1980s. It was more than 40 years ago that he set out to photograph the New York Chinese community as part of the New York Chinatown History Project, now the Museum of Chinese in America. The work was meant to record a part of New York culture that was rapidly changing within a city that was itself rapidly changing. He earned the trust of Chinatown residents and gained access to interior lives during a pivotal time when new waves of immigrants from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China began to converge into Chinatown, altering the demographic landscape of what was then home to earlier migrations. As a result of changes in the immigration laws in the mid 1960s, an older, primarily male community (due to racist immigration laws, such as the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882) was being replaced by a rapidly expanding new influx of immigration of young families. In person

Liah Sinquefield and Rachel Peet

Also known as the “magic hour” by photographers and cinematographers, capturing these one-of-a-kind images is a must. However, it’s essential to be quick with your lens as the magic only lasts so long. However, with all this breathtaking beauty also comes various challenges with shadows, exposure, color balance, and glare. Join us in learning how to overcome these obstacles and to capture the magic. Classes begin with a basic introduction to lighting, color balance, and tricks necessary to photograph just the right, “golden” moment. During the next three classes, participants will get out and about with their cameras. They will explore Audubon Street in downtown as well as other areas of the students’ choice. The final class is back in the studio, where participants share their experiences and glowing, “golden” images with one
