SUMMER SESSION
Adventures in Art is a series of thematic week-long sessions focuses on art-making through observation, imagination, materials and techniques. Join us for 8 weeks to explore painting, drawing, clay and more! There are programs for 4-6 year olds and for young people entering grades 2–5, grades 6–8, and grades 8-12. Explore art materials and techniques. Discover art and artists. Encourage creativity and imagination.
Summer Art Classes are offered for young people ages 2 through teens, including a parent-child
class. Classes meet once a week, usually in the afternoon. Students may attend one or more weekly Adventures in Art programs as well as an art class.

Learn, discover and create! Explore clay, wood, papier-mâché, paints, drawing materials and collage. Children are encouraged to observe and interpret the world around them with imagination and individual expression. Construct, paint, collage, build, draw and print, inspired by weekly themes. For younger artists who are ready to work independently. Programs include all materials, stories, snacks, and outdoor recreation. Students bring their own lunch. Please dress for mess.
*Optional 2 hours of child care from 1:00-3:00pm is available on a limited basis at $85 per week and $65 per week from July 6-9. You must sign up for the entire week.

Make all types of art and use all kinds of art materials in unexpected ways. We will paint without brushes, draw with scissors and wire, make sculpture and drawings that move and create paintings and collage by chance. Explore making art that is felt and not seen. Make art that is here today and gone tomorrow, sand mandalas and environmental art, and art that is hiding in plain sight, camouflage art and Campbell’s soup cans.

We will explore the art of transportation from the design, shape, size and colors of trains, cars, ships and aircraft to travel posters, destinations, bridges, tunnels, tracks, roads and maps. We will make paintings, drawings, sculpture and origami maps of real and imaginary places and vehicles. We will take to the skies with paper airplanes, parachutes and kites. We will look at works of art depicting transportation and colorful travel posters. Includes museum visit to the Yale Center for British Art to see special exhibit: Art for All: British Posters for Transport.

Take an island adventure and see the sea through art. Be inspired by the tropical environment and island people. Create sea inspired art such as intricately patterned South-Pacific island masks and the colorful folk art of Haiti. See the lush landscape through Gauguin’s eyes and traditional print arts of Hawaii. We will create paper batiks, jewelry and papiér-maché sculpture that reflect the local animals and natural forms.

Meet Russian-French artist, Marc Chagall through his art which is filled with color, people, places, fantasy and memories. He made everything: paintings, theater sets, costumes, murals, prints, illustrations, tapestries, ceramics, stained glass windows and mosaics. We will explore Russian art through Chagall’s eyes by creating drawings and paintings of our homes, and families, making fantasy story illustrations, a mini theater set, with puppets and costumes, cellophane stained glass window and mixed media mosaic mural. We will also learn some Russian phrases.

Learn drawing foundations the fun way by learning how to draw manga heads, bodies, inking techniques, environments, stories, chibis (the cute little characters) and animals. We will make our own sketchbooks and use paint, ink, and pastels. Create your own illustrated stories and a life size manga chibi self-portrait painting and then stuff it!

The 1970’s to the Max! – CLASS IS FULL

Explore and create, inspired by art and fun icons from the 1970s: trolls, sand art, smiley faces, high tops, paisley, slime, disco balls, pet rocks, spin art, UFOs, flower power, graffiti and pop art! Paint with vibrant, bold color. Create optical illusions and geometric designs. Make collages and sculptures. Materials include clay, paint, papier-mâché, sand, glitter, rocks and more.

Create nature & fantasy shadow boxes, box art inspired by Andy Warhol’s Brillo Box and Pop art, and surreal boxes inspired by artist, Joseph Cornell. We will create two dimensional cube paintings and drawings and sculpture made from multiple origami boxes. We will make boxes to keep things in, painted in faux finishes and embellished with “jewels” and trinkets.

First you make and use your own funky and incredible pinhole camera. Then we will sketch and construct small settings and collections of objects for photo shoots using handmade elements, toys, optical illusions, mirrors and colorful objects. Have fun learning about the 35mm camera and develop your photographs in the darkroom. Use the darkroom to make cool photograms. Bring a 35mm camera if you have one. The cost of film and photo paper is included.

Put on your sunglasses because during this week we make EVERYTHING sparkle and shine with glitter, foil papers, “gems,” metallic paint, pencils and metallic oil pastels. Projects include collages, origami, papier-mâché sculptures, picture frames, boxes and paintings.

A week for the imagination! How would you like to make a 3-foot butterfly, a fake foot-long sub sandwich, or a flying unicorn? Now is your chance to unleash your creativity. Develop sculptural and structural skills and challenge your imagination as you bend, cut, glue, tape, lace, tie, wrap, papier-mâché and paint. Explore a variety of materials, including ping-pong balls, cellophane and cardboard. It will be hands-on while stages of assembly are demonstrated—you add your own magic.

Jewelry/Metalsmithing for Teens YP46SU10

Have fun while learning basic metal working techniques to create jewelry and mini sculpture.
Saw, hammer, fold, twist, cut, stamp, rivet, solder and shape copper sheet metal and wire. Students will experience using hand tools to manipulate metal and a torch (one-on-one with instructor) to make metal malleable and solder pieces together as needed. 2 and 3-dimensional forms will be explored, including organic pods, leaves, spheres, circles, etc. to make wearable art or sculpture.

Work in CAW's pottery studio. Explore the endless possibilities of clay and learn hand-building techniques including coil, pinch, and slab. Create clay animals, bugs, suns, pots, a wind chime and more. Children will learn glazing techniques for some pieces which will be fired in our kiln.

Cartooning the EZ Way YP16SU10

Using simplified drawing methods consisting of lines and circles, find out how easy it is to draw all sorts of cartoon images: cars, superheroes, super villains, hip-hop/urban-street, animals, creatures, characters, dragons and whatever your imagination can conjure up. Focus on individual students and developing what they like to draw. We will build on your input and ideas. Whether beginner or advanced, there will be something for everyone who has a desire to draw and learn in a fun, stress-free and diverse environment where kids are allowed to be kids... no pressure! Note: a computer is available and can be used for students who want to scan their artwork into a PC and enhance it digitally with color, comic page layout etc. using Adobe Photoshop.

Teen Monotype Printmaking YP18SU10
Instructor: Maura Galante
Tuesday afternoons, 4:00-6:00 (June 29-July 27)
This class gives students the opportunity for creative expression and a different approach to art making, as well as adding to their portfolio and art vocabulary. Monotype is the printmaking process most like painting. It produces unique, one-of-a kind prints, and enables the artist to create in a very spontaneous way. Students will be able to work at their own pace and experiment with a variety of tools and techniques. We will explore color, texture, composition and personal imagery. Oil based inks and non-toxic cleanup supplies will be used, and students will be instructed and supervised in the use of the printmaking presses available in the studio. Note: the oil base printing ink used is waterproof and permanent. It is safe, nontoxic, and conforms to ASTM D 4236. All materials are included. Additional paper can be purchased from the instructor for $3.00 for a 22x30 inch sheet.

Teen Photography – CLASS IS FULL

This class will introduce the basic technical and artistic elements of photography. Every student will learn how to use a manual camera, the fundamentals of processing film, and making prints. We will discuss the importance of lighting, composition, and the unique creative possibilities of photography. A 35mm manual type camera is preferred. Students will need to purchase film and paper. For new and continuing students. Class limit 7.

Teen Digital Photography – CLASS IS FULL

Wednesday afternoons, 4:30-6:30 (June 23-July 28)
Step out of the darkroom and into the world of color photography and desktop printing. This is an introductory class on digital photography for interested amateurs who want to improve their photographic skills, as well as serious artists excited to explore new photographic technology. We will cover camera basics, file formats, and digital printing. Students will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to crop, tone and improve their pictures just like professional photographers and artists. A digital camera is required; a home computer and desktop printer recommended. Some advice on buying a digital camera will be offered if interested.

This class is for new and returning students. Explore line, shape, form, light, composition, proportion and the development of your own ideas and how to represent them in your work. Study images through still life and figure drawing. Some watercolor painting will be introduced, with a special focus on color. We will discuss materials, techniques, composition, and the effects of light and shadow on color. Weather permitting, we will work outdoors. Individual expression is encouraged.

Teen Clay – CLASS IS FULL

Thursday afternoons, 5:00-7:00 (June 24-July 29)
An exploratory survey of sculptural and pottery forms and techniques, including hand-building and wheelthrowing, slip decoration, and glazing. Open to beginning and continuing students, with work adapted to each student’s interest. Students may elect to create high-fired works for which there will be an additional charge of $2.00 per pound for each item fired.

Classes meet weekly. Beginning and ending dates are noted with each course description. There will be no class on Monday, July 5, 2010.
Each child's readiness is more important than the age guidelines noted. Call if you wish to discuss the level of work in any class.
Material costs are included in class fees.
Old clothes or a smock are strongly recommended.
Only registered students can attend classes.
Please enroll by June 14. You may enroll after this date, but early enrollment is encouraged due to limited class size. You can register NOW by mail or online. Mailed applications and enrollments will be processed in the order they are received according to the postmark. You may also register in person at the CAW office between 9 and 5, Monday through Friday.
Please note that your place in a class is secured with the receipt of your payment.
All classes have limited enrollment.
The decision to cancel a class which does not meet its required minimum enrollment is made about one week before the class begins.
Students are only notified if a class is full or cancelled. If you would like confirmation of your registration, please send a stamped self-addressed envelope.
