DRAWING & PAINTING

The Drawing & Painting faculty are available for consultation concerning classes and development of artistic goals.  Students should bring any appropriate art materials to the first class to discuss them with the instructor.

Some courses require the use of pigments and solvents that are not recommended for use during pregnancy or by individuals with health problems.  Please contact the Workshop if you have questions regarding a certain course.

 

BEGINNING COURSES

Introduction to Drawing DP01SU10b
Instructor: Diana Brownell
Tuesday evenings, 6:30-9:30 (June 22-July 27)
In this class students will learn the fundamentals of drawing from observation. Students will manipulate basic drawing materials and begin to recognize relationships between contour, shape, form, space and light. The class will begin with short exercises designed to train a student’s eye to see objectively. Later, students will complete longer studies and address issues including proportion, perspective, shading and the subjective character of the artist’s hand. Students will discover, with practice, that drawing can be easy, immediate and enjoyable. Bring vine charcoal, soft pencil, eraser, and two large clips to the first class. Paper provided.

Drawing Flowers and Forms from Nature DP02SU10

Saturday mornings, 9:00-12:00 (June 26-July 31)
This class will use flowers and natural forms (bones, branches, rocks, skulls) as our inspiration and as vehicles for study and expression. The fundamentals of drawing from observation will be explored and individual approaches to the drawing process and materials will be encouraged. A trip to the Peabody Museum and a local garden will be included. Open to beginning and continuing students who wish to work more independently. Please bring a sketchbook and any drawing supplies you have to the first class. Some paper provided.

Exploring “Color” in Watercolor DP03SU10

Tuesday mornings, 9:30-12:30 (June 22-July 27)
Color is the most exciting means of expression you have as an artist. When using watercolor paints, the pigment choices you make help you to create harmony and express emotion. In this class, we will explore watercolor pigments, their unique properties and color design to help you understand the “color” in watercolor and how to use color most effectively. Intermediate watercolor students are welcome. Beginning students need to speak to the instructor. Watercolor paper will be sold in class. A materials list will be provided upon registration.

Drawing from the Figure DP04SU10

Wednesday afternoons, 1:00-4:00 (June 23-July 28)
Students will study the basic concepts of form, volume, light and composition with gesture drawing as part of the experience. We will experiment with color using pastels, oil sticks, charcoal and pencils. Beginners as well as experienced students are welcome. Please bring any drawing materials you have to the first class including a soft pencil and vine charcoal. A list of drawing media will be provided at the first class. Some paper provided.

Introduction to Painting DP05SU10

Tuesday evenings, 7:00-10:00 (June 22-July 27)
It’s time to pick up the brushes and discover the expressive possibilities of light and color. This class will unfold the mysteries of painting by introducing students to the basics. Instruction will be provided in the selection of materials, setting up a palette, handling paint and composing a picture. Study will emphasize learning to see what you wish to paint simply, with the goal of rendering form clearly in terms of color and design. Come to the first class prepared to paint. A list of suggested materials will be provided upon registration. Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing.

Introduction to Watercolor DP06SU10

Wednesday mornings, 9:00-12:00 (June 23-July 28)
Come experience the fun of watercolor painting. This six week class is designed for new students who have not painted with watercolors and are curious about the medium and the process. Students will become familiar with watercolor materials, color mixing and painting techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Please bring a 1 inch, flat, watercolor brush and three tubes of paint (Cobalt Blue, Alizarin Crimson, and Cadmium Yellow) to the first class.

Painting Dusk DP08SU10

Thursday evenings, 6:00-9:00 (June 24-July 29)
Nature provides some of the most beautiful displays of color in the final hours of daylight. In this course, we will embrace summer’s late sunset and paint outdoors near dusk at contrasting urban and natural environments around the New Haven area. This is a challenging time to paint, as color and light rapidly shift. In this course we will practice establishing shorthand to simplify the landscape and to make quick oil studies as well as longer sustained paintings. We will also review materials for painting outdoors, surface preparation, mixing colors and techniques for painting in low light situations. All levels of experience are welcome. A materials list will be provided by the instructor.

An Introduction to Painting from the Figure DP10SU10

Friday mornings, 9:00-12:00 (June 25-July 30)
There are few subjects as visually compelling as the human form. Whether the approach is gestural, topographical, or narrative, the figure continues to capture the imaginations of painters at all levels. In this class we will apply the basic principles and methods of painting to depictions of the live model. As well as addressing issues of color, form and light, we will investigate composition, gesture, anatomy and narrative. Come to the first class prepared to paint with either oil or acrylic. Prerequisite: Beginning Painting.

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED CLASSES

Intermediate Drawing DP09SU10
Instructor: Levni Sinanoglu
Thursday evenings, 7:00-10:00 (June 24-July 29)
This course is intended for students who have completed Beginning Drawing, or the equivalent. We will continue to explore line, tonality, value, volume, light and structure through observed situations including still life, interior spaces, landscape, the skeleton, and the figure. Focus will be on developing geometry in defining masses, uses and observation of light and shadow, and becoming comfortable with extended engagement with a drawing. We will explore various materials as well as different approaches to drawing including memory and system based models. Artists and works of art will be a part of classroom discussion as well as critiques of ongoing work. Students should bring a variety of drawing materials to the first class.

Painting Outdoors: Man & Nature DP11SU10

Saturday mornings, 9:30-12:30 (June 26-July 31)
The New Haven area provides an enormous variety of settings for imaging the landscape and our relation to it. Each week, our class will meet at a different location from the wooded terrain of Sleeping Giant Park to the industrial settings of New Haven Harbor. We will discuss the formal properties and technical methods involved with the landscape while also addressing the content and meanings that define our relationships to our surroundings. Our first meeting will take place at the pavilion in the College Woods section of East Rock Park near the Cold Spring Road entrance. A list of subsequent locations will be distributed at that time. Come to first class prepared to paint.

Egg Tempera Techniques!!! DP07SU10

Wednesday evenings, 6:00-9:00 (June 23-July 28)
This hands-on course will follow the examples of egg tempera techniques employed by Italian artists of the 12th to 15th century. Using traditional gesso as a ground, we will prepare wood panels for painting with egg tempera, learn to carve relief and work with gold leaf. Students will also learn how to make egg tempera paint using ground pigments, explore glazing techniques, and mix emulsions for combining oil and egg tempera. Using photo resources, students may work from reproductions of master works as well as from personalized imagery. A materials list will be provided upon registration.

Graphic Narrative DP12SU10

Thursday mornings, 9:00-12:00 (June 24-July 29)
The graphic novel format is an exciting challenge for artists of any level to take on. As a class we will explore composition, material, content and form as we create our own unique narratives. Classes will consist of short, thought-provoking exercises as well as long-term, more finished projects. Our goal will be for each student to leave this class with a completed, polished, short work of graphic narrative fiction. This class will be working with water-soluble paints, collage, and pen and ink, and other applicable mediums.

Working From a Model DP13SU10

Friday evenings, 6:00-10:00 (June 25-July 30)
Join us to draw or paint from the live model. This is a great opportunity for each student to set his/her own objectives, develop observational drawing and painting skills and become better acquainted with the figure as subject. The four hour session includes mixed length poses.

WORKSHOPS

Tour through Chelsea with Steven DiGiovanni DP23SU10W
Saturday June 12, 11-3:00
Come join painting instructor Steven DiGiovanni on a four-hour walk up and down the streets of Chelsea in Manhattan. There you will discover gorgeous gallery spaces and artworks by talents from around the world: painting, sculpture, installation, video and everything in between. You will be inspired, intellectually invigorated, seduced or possibly confused, and even a bit disgruntled. No matter, the time goes by swiftly; you will have fun, and your mind and body will receive the exercise they so need. Bring comfortable shoes. Students will be notified of meeting location before the event. Please note students will provide their own transportation.

Intensive Summer Painting Workshop DP20SU10w

Monday-Friday, June 14-June 18, 9:00-3:00
Come join us for a week, for 6 hours each day, working from one, continuous figure tableau. This workshop provides a unique opportunity for artists of all levels of experience and proficiency to focus on one or more works in a concentrated setting. Students will be able to explore aspects of the creative process that may only be revealed through 30 hours of continuous development. Instruction will be focused on the needs and objectives of each individual student and will include brief presentations and introductions of methods and examples from art history and contemporary practice. Come to the first class ready to go and prepared to lose yourself in the process of creative discovery.

Summertime Romance: Special One-Week Oil Pastel In The Landscape DP21SU10w

Are you ready for a beautiful summertime fling? Set aside one very special week to get to know the beauty and power of the unique medium of oil pastel. It’s lightweight and very transportable, making it perfect to take outdoors into the landscape. Wouldn’t you love to be able to record small, intense, lyrical work on the spot, capturing that amazing feeling of summertime romance? The first class will meet at CAW, and we’ll explore how to push expressive boundaries by way of quick exercises and a brief excursion to areas right around the Workshop. For the following four evenings we’ll meet at several outdoors locations in nearby areas, such as scenic (and highly romantic) Edgerton Park, and Lighthouse Point Park. Next time you’re headed out of town on a wild, summer trip to exotic locales, you’ll be ready to bring nothing more than a small pad and an inexpensive box of oil pastels to capture the beauty that awaits. Prior drawing/painting experience very helpful. A list of suggested materials will be provided upon registration.

The workshop is an introduction to the art of combining textured Asian papers with watercolor painting. Adding collage to watercolor painting allows for experimentation to a new way of expression, creating beauty in texture. Principles of composition and design will be addressed.
