A-Z Painting + Drawing: Drawing and Discovery

with Nelli Shevelkina

Skills in the visual arts are built in the same way as learning to play a musical instrument or sport: by practicing and training, and by challenging you with new techniques and ideas. In Drawing and Discovery, young artists ages 6-11 will explore fundamental concepts of line, texture, shading, and color through the fun, creative, and age-appropriate projects. Students will try their hand at figure drawing, portraits, volume and perspective, and experiment with professional art materials. Students will work independently or as a group according to their age, level of experience, personal interest and individual artistic style. This class will be offered continuously during the year, allowing students to progressively develop skills in visual literacy, perception and creativity progressively. Small class size (no more than six students) allows each student to receive significant individual attention.

Mixed Media Mania

Explore color, design and creativity in our warm, nurturing environment. Children will work with various mediums – paint, pencils, oil pastels, watercolor, and more. We’ll also create collage, printmaking and papier mache. Develop skills, visual literacy, problem-solving, imagination and self-expression!

Clay Play: Deep Space & Beyond!

with Gul Rukh Selim

Create your own imaginary world in clay! Use your imagination to make clay pieces that together make your world! You chose the theme: Star Wars Jedi and their warships; a medieval castle with knights in armor; or a jungle full of the wildest animals on a rampage! Bring some pictures to class, if you wish, to help with the constructions of your world. We will use all the techniques of clay construction, including pinching, coiling and slab building to make the pieces. Pieces will be glazed or decorated with engobe and fired and ready to take home at the end of term.

Springtime Saturday Sketching

Learn and practice basics of drawing plus develop drawing skills and personal style through observation, techniques and imagination. Students will work with pencils, pen, charcoal, pastels, ink and watercolor. Many new projects for continuing students.

Junior Potters On The Wheel

Cups and mugs, bowls and plates, pottery are loads of fun to create! From the wheel to the table, Junior Potters wedge, throw, trim and glaze unique works of utilitarian art. Instruction will be given to each student at her or his level of experience. Come cover your hands in clay in CAW’s pottery studio. Both new and returning students are welcome.

Fun With Metal

with Connie Pfeiffer

Make jewelry and mini-sculpture with copper sheet metal and wire to wear or hang. Stamp, fold, hammer, bend, cut, twist and even heat metal to create pendants, medallions and forms from nature such as pea pods and leaves. Students will explore using basic hand tools, especially hammers, mallets, cutters, files, pliers and torches (one-on-one with instructor) to create works in metal.

Teen Clay

with Michael Bradford

Students can explore or create a personal project for the home or garden. Instruction covers all of the skills needed: hand-building, sculpture, surface design, and use of the wheel. The instructor will provide students with individual help at their own skill level, and demos to support their learning. Open to both beginning and continuing students. Cost includes clay and firing fees.
