Weekly demonstrations introduce students to the tools and techniques required for working with nonferrous sheet metal and wire. Demonstrations may include sawing, filing, cold-connecting, soldering, surface embellishment, forging, shaping, fold forming, finishing, and patina coloring.

Beginning Metal Sculpture

Learn how to make sculpture by welding (oxyacetylene and MIG), brazing, cutting (torch and plasma cutter), hammering, and more. Mixing materials such as wood, concrete, plaster, and paper will be encouraged.

Beginning/Intermediate Stained Glass

Using the Tiffany copper foil technique, students will learn the basic skills of stained glass, pattern preparation, design and layout, glass cutting, grinding, soldering, and assembly.
Suggested ages: 18 +
Supplies: Some glass and materials provided. Additional glass is available for purchase. Students should wear comfortable clothing and no open-toed shoes. May require some work to be done outside of classs, based on the complexity of the design. Beginner’s materials fee of $75 for required tool kit is payable at the same time as registration.

Stone Carving – No Open Enrollment Available for this class
Gul Rukh Selim
Transform a rough-hewn block of soapstone or alabaster into a polished or textured sculpture while learning how to use hand tools such as chisels, rasps, and polishing tools and materials. Some electrical tools will be available for polishing and buffing. Beginning students will use images, print or online, sketching, and modeling with clay to become comfortable working in a 3-D medium.
Suggested ages: 18+
Supplies: Sturdy padded gloves, e.g., golf or baseball gloves,to protect the joints, especially, elbows, masks for filtering out fine stone dust during the polishing stage, and clear eye protectors such as ones worn by construction workers. Both masks and eye protection are available at any hardware store. Stone will be provided by CAW.

Workshop
Japanese Lampmaking
Phillip Chambers
Learn how easy it is to make an elegant Japanese shoji lamp in this one-day workshop. Students will use wood and rice paper to create a floor or table lamp and will learn a simple technique for electrically wiring the lamp. Students will leave with a unique lamp of their own design. All materials supplied, but feel free to bring any special rice paper.

Building and Experimenting with LED Light

Experiment with light-emitting diodes (LED) and electricity. Volts, amps, ohms, and wattage as they apply to LED lights will be discussed. Our final project will be to build an LED bulb that students can take home and screw into their light sockets.

The Wonderful World of Epoxy Clay

Explore the multitude of uses of the amazing 2-part epoxy clay which is easy to use, safe, self-hardening, non-shrinking, weatherproof, and permanent. Each student will create a small epoxy figure using an armature made in class. Workshop will take place at the instructor’s home workshop and gardens. Make a Mosiac Clock

Create a unique, functional mosaic clock of your own design using glass and pottery tiles. Learn the basic mosaic techniques of cutting, laying, and adhering tiles. After designing, creating, and adhering your clock to the backer board, insert the clock mechanism to create a custom-made working clock. Material fee of $40 per person payable at registration.
