Floor Loom Weaving

Learn the basics of preparing and operating a loom and weave a sampler combining many useful weaves. Students will complete the term by designing and weaving one or two simple projects of their choice. For intermediate and advanced students, individual guidance will be given to design and weave projects with more complex structures using multi-harness looms.

Knitting Basics–No Open Enrollment for this class
Knitting Basics is an introduction to the knit stitch and purl stitch. These two stitches, and their variations, are the basic building blocks for any knit pattern. In this class, we will make a long scarf from chunky yarn using the knit purl-stockinette stitch and create a simple texture by combining various easy knit purl combinations like the garter stitch and moss stitch.
We will also learn how to create embellishments like tassels and pompoms to decorate the scarf and create unique one of a kind designs.
Supplies: Chunky weight yarn so you can clearly see your stitches. The yarn label will tell you the size knitting needles you’ll need. Please email Tarmmand@gmail.com with any questions

Leave templates and rulers behind as you improvise a quilt. Learn a variety of improvisational piecing techniques, expand and challenge your understanding of color, and let go of preconceptions as you discover a new way to approach the quilting process. By the end of the class you will have created a quilt unlike any you may have made before.
Supplies: Rotary cutter and mat. Approximately three yards (total) of various cotton fabrics.

Fold, stitch, wrap, and clamp fabric in this introduction to shibori dyeing. Shibori is a Japanese manual resist dyeing method, producing beautiful patterns on fabric. Each participant will be given 4 cotton napkins to dye, but is welcome to bring a small amount of cotton or silk from home to dye as well.
Supplies: None, but they are welcome to bring small amounts (less than 1/2 yard) of cotton or silk to add to the dye pot if they contact me first!

Learn to knit fingerless gloves in this one day workshop. We will knit one glove in the workshop and you can complete the second one at home or at our follow up workshop.
Supplies: Materials can be purchased at Knit New Haven on Whitney Ave or JoAnn Fabrics, check online for locations
- 2-3 colors of yarn, can also be leftover yarn balls of the same weight. DK or Worsted weight yarn. Worsted weight is recommended for beginners, but if you have made any knit or crochet project before and have leftover yarn, you can bring that.
- Size needles recommended on the yarn label. You can use straight needles or cable needles.
- A tapestry needle for sewing in the ends.
Prerequisite: Knowledge of how to knit and purl
