Learn / explore techniques for painting and color mixing watercolor, tempera and acrylic. Learn clay construction in hand-building (coil, pinch, slab). Week 2 +3

Sew Much Fun

with Christine Earehart and Eva Scopino

Study iconic fashion designers from Coco Chanel to Azzedine Alaïa for inspiration. Draw from your inner fashionsita to create fashion illustrations and turn designs from the croquis into ready-to-wear items, upcycled clothing, cosplay-inspired gear, and more from assorted fabrics! In addition to conceptualizing your design and sewing wearable items, participants will also learning tips styling, produce a mini photo shoot, and learn the basics of felting to create pieces from colorful wool roving. To top it off, a fashion runway on the last day! Ooh-la-la, it’s ‘Sew Much Fun’!

Week 4 + 5

Teen Print and Book Binding

with Paulette Rosen and Jennifer Van Elswyk

This two-week program merges Printmaking and Book Arts to focus on creating projects.

Printmaking: An Introduction (Week I)
Students will learn a variety of silkscreen and other printing techniques, beginning with one-color compositions and progressing to multiple color compositions. Students will work on paper and fabric and discover how to apply their art in practical ways: editions of books, greeting cards, T-shirt, scarf or tote bag design. Emphasis will be on student interests.

Print & Book Arts (Week II)
In week II, students will continue working in Printmaking with Jennifer in the morning and later explore the Bindery Studio with Paulette Rosen. Here they will learn the basics of how to build handmade one of a kind books using the prints they created. The resulting books can be used as artistic exploratory sketchbooks, dream journals, poems, drawings, scrapbooks, daily thought collectors, and any other artistic form you desire. With the silkscreen process, students will produce several editions of uniquely beautiful art books.

Week 6

Explore the Arts of Greater New Haven

with Phil Levine

Explore the Arts of Greater New Haven. Study Architecture in and around Yale, Art History in the Yale Art Gallery and Natural History, and exercise observational drawing in the Peabody Museum. Morning classes will meet at different museums within walking distance Creative Arts Workshop. This is an excellent class for expanding your portfolio, developmental drawing, and media experiments.

Teen Metal/Jewelry

with Connie Pfeiffer

Learn basic metalworking techniques to create mini sculpture and jewelry. Saw, hammer, fold, cut, stamp, rivet and solder copper sheet metal and wire. Students will use hand tools and a torch (one-on-one with instructor) to make metal malleable and solder pieces together as needed. Two and three-dimensional forms will be explored, including organic leaves, spheres, circles etc. New projects for returning students.

Week 8

Teens Exploring Identity

with Phil Levine

his class gives students a real opportunity, as artists to explore the topic of identity and Family. The results have been creative and exciting. Students explore topics like family, friends, personal exploration, ethnic and racial origins and many others. They have the chance to visualize old and new themes that inform the viewer and surprised the artists. This is a very special class that promotes communications about self-realization through the visual arts, in a safe and supportive environment. Media will be photography, painting, drawing, collage and construction. Students should bring to materials of interest to them and theme. Museum trips Yale and Peabody.

Summertime Pottery

with Alice Chittenden

This is a class designed to teach beginning clay working skills while exploring a summertime theme. Students will use the potters wheel to make ice cream bowls, create hand built wind chimes, create a flower pot or vase with coils and much more. Some of our work will be glazed while other pieces will be painted. Students who have previously taken this class are encouraged to join us again this year to expand their skills and make new projects.
